What is the purple flower in the foreground shaped like a cone?  The leaves look like canna leaves...

I just got pickerel rush.
I planted it in gravel in the pond, no pot. About 8-12 inches deep.
will it overwinter like that? It freezes there. I'm zone 5 too.

perplexed ponder , Thanks! I have mine planted in a pot in gravel, no soil. I also stuck some bare root under some stones on side of pond.  WE are in zone 5 also. They both freeze but come back every year. I dont think you have any thing to worry about.

Your pond and garden look wonderful!  It's no wonder the butterflies look beautiful.

I love large, natural-looking ponds!

What intense color, in your flower garden, esp. the reds.

I have different colors of cone flowers all around my house as well as different bee balm.  I have several different butterfly bushes here too and they all get a lot of visitors each day.  That's what finally draws in the hummingbirds too, if they haven't already found there way to my feeders.  My blackeyed susans are out now, and they set the flower beds off too and there color will last a long time.  Some of the hanging baskets are looking a little tired but still trying.  We had some wicked storms last week and it beat down some of my tall plants like Yarrow and Russian sage, etc. and I am going to try to stake them up once more and see if that helps.  The pond is full of lilies and hyacinth.  I never want summer to end.  It's just beautiful out there now.

In the first photo, what are the red flowers next to the purple coneflowers?  Are they one of the new red hybrids of coneflower?
