New horse - new hope
« on: July 27, 2008, 07:38:04 PM »
My daughter's "good" horse died June 4th. It was unexpected, he hadn't been ill, had no injuries. And he was a very gentle soul. I was nagged by the thought that he would be worried about my daughter.
Because he WAS her first love. She used to sleep in the barn to be near him.

Anyway, we saw a horse today and bought her. She is a LOT like Shorty, and very gentle.

So I went to "the tree named Shorty" - planted on Shorty's grave - and told him that we had found someone to take care of my daughter.
I think he understands. :)

I guess I'm a sentimental fool - paying money to ease the soul of a dead horse. But it makes sense to me.

So Sorry to hear about your DD horse. I think it is wonderful you got her a new one. I am sure he has found himself a wonderful new home. We have had the same problem with dogs. The new one will never replace the old but have come to love with a whole new personality and new disposistion. I am sure your DD will come to love this one just as much as her old one. Thanks for sharing your story. :)

Good, I'm glad to hear you did this. So often you hear of people who think they loved the deceased pet so much that they won't get another. I think it should be the other way around. I hope it all works out.

I agree with Esther, the finest tribute to a beloved pet is to give another of their kind a loving home.  There is always room for more love in your heart and it is a good lesson for your daughter too.  I think Shorty will rest in peace now.

The way you treat the "soul" of a dead thing reflects on how you treat living beings.  I say it's good karma, and just the right thing to do, to show respect to something you loved that has passed on.  Good lesson for your kids, too.

Now, a question - "grave"????  You BURIED the horse?  HOW??  Or he was cremated and you buried ashes?

Qu. #2  - where are the pictures??

Sorry about losing your DD's horse. There is something about losing a horse that is very different than the loss of any other pet.
Its a tough one to take. :(
I wish we could have buried my Arab mare when she died. We didn't have a way to do it at the time. :-\

Oh wow, my heart feels like it's breaking.... :'(    I don't think you are a sentimental fool at all, but someone who knows what it is to love and be loved by a beloved friend such as your daughter had.  I hope she is doing okay.  Of course it must ease Shorty's spirit to know that there is another to watch over her.  I hope he rests in peace knowing that.   :'(   :'(   :'(

Oh golly - now we have Irish twins.
I had made an offer on another horse, and didn't hear back, I thought I had offended them or something. So... I got an email, they accepted my offer.  :o

So, we are totally unprepared, but its exciting.  @O@

These are the horses.

Oh, Sav, you made me cry.  :'( And now it looks like you have two horses to take care of your daughter.   o(:-)

I'm sure Shorty will be pleased.  Horses are so intelligent, it's amazing.  Is there any way to find out why he died so unexpectedly?  How is your daughter doing with all this?   :-\

No way to tell what killed Shorty. I was out of town. My daughter was very grown up about the whole thing. Watched him into the ground.
To bury a horse takes a backhoe - I have a friend who has backhoes, and he sent a guy over.
Cara wrapped him in my best waffle weave lambs wool blanket - she didn't know how expensive it was - and kept a bit of hair from his mane and tail.
She helped pick the tree we planted over him - a Southern Red Oak.

She cried piteously after Shorty was buried.
But she's excited about the new horses. :)

I don't know anything about horses but the two newest members of your family look mighty fine.  Annie looks to have a gentle soul.

The quarter horse sure sounds wonderful! 18 is not at all too old, I ride a 24 year old. The draft does look sweet. Bettyboo will be jealous, she loves drafts.
