Hosta Summer Sale.
« on: August 01, 2008, 11:31:00 AM »
Personally I know I love the heads up some of you send out on websites having plant sales.

New Hampshire Hostas are having a 40% off sale. The prices listed on the website do not reflect the lower price. Once you put an item in your cart the lower price will show up.

So many great hostas for under $10, to me even if they are small this year its a great deal. If I had more room I would have gone nuts.

I did order four hosta, but I have NOT ordered from this site previously.

Both Garden WatchDog and people on the GardenWeb Hosta boards have good things to say about NGH.

I see loads I'd like but really don't have any spare shade to put them. Have several still in nursery pots right now....dang it.

Leeanne,

From what I am hearing some hostas grow better in pots, so don't be too upset with yourself. What I also hear is they looove water and do quite well bare root in water, maybe you have room at the edge of your pond.

The site has them grouped and there are sun tolerant ones. Maybe you could grow some of those?

I have never tried them either.
Leeanne, would 'sun tolerant' in So. Cal. still mean some shade needed?

I swear the next place I live will have to be all moring sun / afternoon shade, with moist, well drained soil. After that, the number of rooms etc is not important!

Cheers,

Mike

Well....I got my order from NHH today. The plants looked great, and potted, which means I don't have to rush to pot them up. Only problem is the sent me the wrong order. :o They will be sending me my order asap and I get to keep the ones they sent me by mistake.

Mike, the trouble with growing hostas in your climate is the heat.  They don't tolerate heat well.  They also need a cold dormant period in the winter.  Without it, they get smaller and smaller until they die.  Your best bet would be with some of the fragrant types.  They are all derived from Hosta plantaginea, which is the most heat tolerant species.

Josh, aren't all fragrant hostas related to Hosta plantaginea? That would be an easy way to tell. I think I read that recently. I have one called Iron Gate Delight that has been getting almost full sun with no damage at all.

I have a noid that has flowers that smell like gardenias. I had no idea fragrant hostas were that fragrant. I smelled it by accident when weeding and it about knocked my socks off. The scent doesn't drift through the air much but boy was it wonderful.

Mostly my hostas are planted back behind trees or shrubs where smelling the blooms would be a chore but I'm going to remedy that if possible.

I placed an order but asked for a September delivery because I am clearing out areas at our new place and it will be cooler.

Thanks again Susan for passing this on.
