First Lily Bud?..It Bloomed today! 8-14-08
« on: August 03, 2008, 07:05:44 AM »
On average how many days does it take for a lily bud to surface?  I think I see the nose cone of my very first lily bud, can't say for sure other than it is a different color than the lily leafs and the shape appearing is more cone-like than lance-like....very excited to see what it is... 8-)~

Congrats!!  You can't miss a bud!  :D  Takes a day or so for a bud to reach the water surface and another to start opening!  Always exciting to see a lily bloom  O0

It can also depend on the variety and the weather.

My tanks are so crowded, I can't see the buds leaving the pots, but I like seeing the "little turtle heads" poking up out of the water before they open  their blooms...talk about anticipation  o(:-)

Ooohh!  Can't wait, can't wait!  Gardening and ponding are definitely exercises in self restraint and patience......(I wonder if there is such a thing as an impatient gardener?)

Howell- great pictures, thanks!

thanks well i have made that question before so you know we are here for help, and people just telling me to wait and be patient, but you know this is just a thing that sometimes you just cant wait, so i would have had rathered if someone have had showed me how it looks like whenever it is surfacing the water and how does a bud looks close to the crown so i thought i might be a little helpful and yes as susytx said it depends in what kind  is it too of course and just asking what kind of lilly do you have?
well hope youll see a blossom soon

Yes, the osmocote ( or its equivalent) is in place and I do see now the "turtle head" on a stalk at the base...it sure is small.  I guess it gets bigger the closer it gets to the surface.  Boy, its "crawling" to the surface as the leaves speed past it to the top.

This is the only one about to bloom and was the only one I had...until I bought a Blink from Tranquility recently.  That one will be a while before it blooms as I just divided it (it was a mature plant) and am also experimenting with trying to grow a vivip plant like on Sean's tutorial.  Two of the leaves on the Blink had vivips starting....great fun!   ;D

Yay!  ;D

It finally bloomed today.  The bud hit the surface yesterday, and it opened to my surprise today.  It took a total of 10 days to bloom from the first sighting of a "turtle head" at the base of the crown.

First blooms are very exciting. I still remember waiting for what seemed to be forever for our first lily to bloom. Yours is very pretty and nicely photographed. Hope you get lots more.

Beautiful  o(:-)

My very good friend once said that the buds just breaking the water looked like "turtle heads" to her.  She passed away last spring...but everytime I see a new bud...I can't help but smile and think of Bobbie.
