Killed Two Turtles

I feel sick at heart, and I hate to admit I did this, but I think it's a good Learning Experience, so I'm going to share it with you guys.

I had two baby stinkpots (musk turtles) that hatched last year, I reared them indoors and pampered them over the winter, then in spring put them in the fish pond, and when fish started coming up half-eaten, I caught the two turtles and put them in their own escape-proof enclosure, where I was power-feeding them in hopes they would be large enough to put with the adult turtles soon.  They are just about big enough.

So Saturday I come home with my two free pots of water lilies, and needed a place to put them until I could get outside Sunday and set up a permanent tub for the lilies.  So I uncovered the turtle tub, moved their hidey-hole-inverted-flower-pot to the side, and set the lilies in there.

The next morning, I fed the turtles, but 10 minutes later after I set up the tubs for the lilies I noticed that the food was not eaten.  Sinking feeling.

I reached to get the lily pots, to move them to their new tub.  Funny - they weren't sitting flat on the ground.  Sinking feeling.

Yup.  While I had thought the turtles would move out of the way of the pots when I set them down, and I also thought that the decending pots would displace water and turtles, I WAS SO STUPID AND THE TURTLES DIDN'T MOVE AND I SET THE HEAVY LILY POTS RIGHT ON TOP OF BOTH OF THEM, and they couldn't move and couldn't come up for air and THEY DROWNED!!!

Feel like crap.

Oh! I would feel the same. You didn't mean it!!!! Learn from this and move on. I know it's hard. You will probably regret this forever. YOU DID NOT INTEND FOR THAT TO HAPPEN. To err is human. etc. Forgive yourself.

Like Jerry said , it was a freak accident . Try not to beat yourself up over it ,after all one of us
could've done the same thing .
