Planting vips - Do you leave on the leaf pad?

I'm just going crazy with joy since my two free lilies are creating all these vips, and I intend to pot up as many as I can.

I've read all of Jerry's tutorials, and the other recent comments, but I can't find info about this... When the vips are ready to pot, do you break them off the pad, or leave part of the pad attached, and put it under the soil?  Do you leave the stem attached?

Also, how deep do you plant the little guys?  The roots are only about 1/2" long.

I have NO expertise in this. But we are close in geography.
My "magnum" Lindsey Woodes produces babies, and I ignore them - hoping they will go away. After awhile, they are rooted in the pond and I dig them out.

I like to leave about a fifty cent sized piece of the pad and maybe an inch and a half of stem on too. 

The only reason, is it makes it easier to pots up like that.
