fruit or seed from an unknown palm tree?
« on: August 12, 2008, 09:29:07 PM »
Hi all,

We were out shopping and eating today and drove by this palm tree and noticed little orange things on the palm and on the ground, we pulled into the parking lot and picked up a few...anyone have any idea???  I know, not a lot to go by, not sure what kind of palm and didn't have my camera with me...

Most likey a pindo palm, also called "jelly" palm.
The leaves are long, stringy, and blueish?

Could have been a queen palm, less likely.
The leaves are fuller, and greener.
The big difference is the way the fronds (leaves) attach to the trunk.
The pindo retains the base of the fronds - so the basket weave look on the truck.
The queen sheds the base of the fronds, and the trunk looks smooth.

Sunbeam56,

Thanks, looks just like the picture of the pindo palm you posted and I did some searching and found that exact picture!  Thanks for the help.  Now, to see if I can get a seed to grow...

Thanks again, I love palms, but are new to them since I used to live in South Dakota and didn't have palm trees there, too cold in the winter months.

Jerry,

Love them all and the bannana (I need one of those) - had a couple in SD from here in AL.  But don't have now.

That made a lot of sence didn't it, lol...
