Just read about N. 'Pink Ribbon' -- way to go, Joyce!
« on: August 09, 2006, 08:18:31 PM »
For those of you that are not WGI members, there was a waterlily naming contest and Joyce won by suggesting the name 'Pink Ribbon' in honor of breast cancer awareness.

What a wonderful idea, Joyce. Congratulations on winning the contest and making a difference!!!

Joyce,
You touch more people's lives than you know....I'm sure one day when this lily really takes off there will be alot of breast Cancer survivors recieve one of these from a loved one. Just because of the name and what it represents.....And just think you are the reason they will recieve it-----you named it.....That is something to be very proud of.....

A beautiful plant that ermerges from the dirt and puts on a beautiful show of flowers and floating pads every year and then fights thru the cold and dark winters as it looses every last beautiful pad...just to return the next year..bigger and better than the year before........

Congrats Joyce and hope you're feeling better soon.

My wife being a breast cancer survivor, I will certainly line up for one of those lilies when they become available.

I did not know that just anyone could join and read at WGI , Thanks for the heads up.

Breast Cancer awareness is important to me.
My stepmother is a survivor, her sister too, her mother too.

My best friend's mother is and my best friend has had several scares but so far, benign.

Joyce,
How nice of you to focus the spotlight on breast cancer.
What a wonderful name and idea!
Great to hear that part of the proceeds will go towards breast cancer!

You still look very beautiful, it was a delight to see the pix of you and your family! o(:-)

Your courage amazes me.. I don't think that I would have your courage if I had to deal with the daily struggle of cancer.

Joyce, you did so good naming Pink Ribbon. Would love to have that lilie, wonder if
some day we can get it.  Sorry that you're having rough time right now, it will end one
day. The victoria mailing list has 3 breast cancer survivors in it that I know, including
me.  If ever you just want to chat, e-mail me.  Marie Fisher (Fernlady1559@aol.com)

Hi Joyce~~~~~When I saw that you have won the water lily naming contest, I was really happy for you.   I had no idea that you were going thru Chemo! :'(   I am so glad that you're almost thru with it!     It's really sad and scary when they have tv comercials and radio ads for Cancer treatment options!   MY GOD, it's like if you don't know someone with Cancer, it's really rare!
Both of my parents mom's had Cancer, Dad's Mom had both breasts removed, years apart from each surgury. Mom's Mom was in her 40's and had ovarian or Cervical Cancer, she was taken off oxygen before she could breathe on her own, my mom was 16 and her mom was all she had.  Her Mom was a vedgetable for six months after and died.  She mumbled like a baby, and my mom would say to her mom "Mom, don't you know who I am"?

My Mother went thru 8 different foster homes her senior year of highschool, had a nervous breakdown.  The Foster home people told my mom that she couldn't leave until she was 21, so on her 18 birthday she thought that she was eloping, went to Reno and married a 16 yr old!    Needless to say, he never held a job, was out partying while my mom stayed home scared to death to be alone.     My sperm donar became a heroin addict,  lives in jail now that his mom died and he can't rip her off anymore. my mom left him after 3 yrs of marriage.  My dads mom tried to adopt my mother and take care of her but the state said no because she was dating my dad!   My Grandmas friends tried to adopt her but they said no because she'd be home alone with the old man.

My mom and I don't speak, she's like dealing with a 15 yr old, very self centered.  My Grandma  (Dad's mom)took care of me most of my life, she actually got custody of my wehn I was 15 yrs old. My DH said "I'm am so happy that despite the  parents you had, that you didn't turn out like them.  My Dad is like a brother to me and my mom like a sister.  My mother has some strange view of me, I got a Mercedes for my Birthday last year, she said yea well Mel (my dh) looks better in it!

My Dad's mom's parents both died of lung cancer, but never smoked!

Sorry for the rant.

Take good care Joyce!

Tammi

Joyce, old friend,

My mother, my aunt (Father's side) AND my sister have all had  breast cancer.  My aunt Eunice died in 2000, age 98, of causes unrelated to cancer.  My mother died in  1995,  age 90, of causes unrelated to cancer.  My oldest sister diagnosed with breast cancer 10 years ago,  still living with no recurrence at age 74.  You WILL endure.  "I will survive"..Johnny Cash, the Highwayman..  Listen and you will connect.

Love ya, kid!
