Yucatan butterfly
« on: August 23, 2008, 01:35:41 PM »
This pretty butterfly was on the window of our RV today.  I've no idea what kind it is, Mimi took the pictures.  To be honest, I'm less enthralled with butterflies these days.  Since they killed my passion vine in Calif I tend to think of them as End Stage Worms.  This one is really brilliantly colored though, anyone know what it is?

Looks like some kind of Hairstreak butterfly but I couldn't find it on-line.  Very pretty.

I recently planted a fruit bearing passion vine 'Frederick' and I've noticed that the Fritillary butterflies don't seem to like it.  I've seen no caterpillars to date....

That is beautiful. I think it amazing that a bug, bird or fish can have such brilliant colors. God must have had fun dreaming up the colors.   :D

I sure wouldn't put those colors together in my house (can you imagine a car painted like that?) but somehow it looks stunning on the butterfly.

I too tried looking for it online but didn't find anything that looked the same.

I've only seen a Quetzal in an aviary, although we really tried to see one in the wild.  We were in Guatemala, it's their national bird, and went up to a Quetzal sanctuary and searched in the dense jungle, heard a couple of them but never saw one.  They are very shy, live in the dense understory and are hard to spot.   Mimi is more the bird aficionada and she really wants to see one in the wild so I think we will try again.  Sadly, although it is the national bird of Guatemala and even their currency is named after it, it is easier to find one in Costa Rica.  We'll probably try there next time.

Beautiful metallic colors on the butterfly.  Great catch, err photo!

Even though I had the Fritillary caterpillars eat most of my passion vines last year before I picked off and mooched them I left them alone this year.  I never realized how pretty they were.  ::)

Marla,

My mom always told me that patience was a virtue. It used to make me soooo mad!

Now I am a gardener, and I have learned.

LOL Jonna - "end stage worms"

I am just beginning to appreciate hummers again after a attack some years back - swear I nearly lost an eye. I would see them, and instinctively cover my eyes, but am learning to relax in their presence again.

Wild life can just be so destructive!

Cheers,

Mike

The hummer probably thought he was going for his cache of sweet water, they can be vicious that's true.  About the butterflies, they are beautiful.  Maybe someday I can look at one and not see a beautiful plant turned into a mangy stalk by a disgusting green worm.  Maybe.
