I can understand her not wanting to be "patted down," but I, for one, am glad they have increased security on the airlines, even though it inconveniences some people.  Think of how many people they could possibly save by catching someone who really had a weapon on them.  It's been a long time since 2001, and if the airlines should decide to ease up on the rules because of that, the terrorists will probably be right there waiting for that to happen.  :(

No, I don't think I'm terribly paranoid, but I do think it's better to be safe than sorry.  :-\

OK, Krista...does that mean you stopped wearing bras???    ::)

Sometimes I think people are unreasonable. So I say, it's my underwire bra setting off the sensor and what if it isn't? For them to just say, "OK, proceed to the plane" is stupid. Why have a sensor then? More than once I've taken my bra off with my blouse on by just unhooking it, letting the straps slide down one arm at a time and wala, it's off. What's the big deal? If that lady had immediately cooperated, she might not have missed her flight. She just was in a mood to not have to do what she was asked. Maybe she'll be more cooperative next time.

Krista had breast reduction surgery!

I would not want to take off my bra in front of hundreds of people in line either. I'm not big busted at all but I know many who are and who would be even more embarrassed than I would be to have people see their girls swinging free and to have people see how big and sturdy their bras have to be.

It finally opened. 8)
If your are that large breasted, you could EASILY hide a derringer (or any small gun) in your cleavage.
She deserved to be searched and should have understood why. (8:-)

Last year we were in Florida and went to the Kennedy Space Center.  I set off the metal detector and after removing all jewelry, cell phone, etc., still set it off.  The guy in front of me had set it off and they took him into a small room, so I was getting really worried.  They never offered to use the handheld thingy.  The guy finally just passed me through.  I was so relieved.  It was much later in the trip that I realized it was from my underwires.  They do contain quite a lot of metal.
In reality, he probably shouldn't have given up so easily.  Yep, I could easily hide a small gun in there.  And there is no way I would ever slip my bra off in a public place, things tend to go south as you get older.
I have been "patted down" in airports and it was no big deal.

Before getting on a plane I make sure I wear clothing without metal zippers or buttons.  Easy.  But many times I forget about the under-wire.  When I set the alarm off I almost always get the "wand."  This has resulted in many LAX "massages!"   :D

Esther, I can do that magic trick too.  Voila! It's off!  ::)

I think we do not have to take our shoes off in LAX anymore.  But before they wouldn't allow paper slippers after I took off my shoes!  So now I always wear my socks to the airport.

 ;D ::) Yeah, that's pretty creepy!

As a needful, large-busted, under- wire wearer, I'd either do what Esther said, or wear an unwired, uncomfortable "shadow" of the real thing. If I'm going to save 40 minutes of my time to simple servants, I'm OK with this solution for a flight lasting a few hours. For longer flights, I might disagree. Gosh, who would've ever thunk it would come to that?!
I'm almost willing to wear metal panties and a ton of piercings... for retribution.  lol

I agree, working int he bingo halls over the years, I've seen alot come out of bra's.  Just last week, this lady's brest were ringing.  She started digging and sure enough there was a cell phone in there.  Then one time, a lady brought a little puppy that she had been bottle feeding, yup right between them so it would stay warm.  lol.  I'm sure you all have seen people reach in and pull out money, how about a whole change purse or small wallet.  Its amazing.  Yes, someone could hide a gun.  It makes me feel better to know they did they extra step to find out what it was.

Funny I never had anyone pull me out of line for underwire bras lol, but my knee brace had metal in it so it took awhile before I realized what was setting off the detector.

However, last time I flew I got my toe nail scissors through!  I think I've lost more that a dozen over the years.

So when people have metal plates, or pins or screws, how do they prove that is what is setting off the sensor? My dad has a slew of stuff holding his shoulder and collar bones + his jaw together.

You get an ID card from your surgeon/hospital that declares your metal parts.
I have one for my lifeport from chemo, and I have one for my breast implants.
(they have metal ports where they are filled)
So when I set off the alarms at the airport, I whip out my cards. 8)

Yeah, and when I see doubt/suspicion in their eyes, I grab the bottom of my shirt and ask them. "Wanna see my scars?" :woot:
They practically shove me through the airport onto the plane.  lol

I've shown my new and improved ladies to so many people now I would do it too...lol. Tis just flesh and scaring now :) A talented surgeons handiwork, not my boobs

And no, I still cant' go braless.. the nipples now point out and up and well I just don't find that attactive on anyone else so won't do it to others.... :D  But boy oh boy is the lack of back pain sweet!!!!! I would do it again if I had too.

I've often wondered about metal plates etc and how that is proven.. guess a doctors note makes sense... or an official version of that.

Krista, a couple of bandaids should fix that nipple problem.  I haven't had surgery, but I could get by going braless with the help of bandaids.  lol

P.S. Good for you for having that surgery.  I have one daughter who really should have it.  I know she would feel better without the weight of those things.  ::)

I wanted it done for over 15 years.. my doc wouldn't even put me on the wait list (2 years although i ended up being able to take a cancellation after 18m :S) until I was done having kids.. since it took me 11 years to conceive the twins, and then we tried for another 2 for another set... well.... there's the numbers. Really is worth it. If your daughter has any questions I'm more than happy to try to answer some. hardest part for me was not seeing my kids on a daily basis for 4 weeks since I couldn't have 3 year olds jumping on me so my parents had them.

I don't have to worry about nipples anymore. (or having my headlights go on for no reason)
Although when I get the chills, I get phantom sensations that they are still there...weird!  :o
When you have a radical mastectomy...everything goes, even those.  :o
Recon MD is trying very hard to talk me into nipple recon, but no way, I've had enough.
And I like NOT having them. :D

I am now the 'Sport's Model Woman'....streamlined and ready for fun!

My metal body parts card is not like a doctors note, it's like a credit card. Can even be swiped for all my medical records. 8)
I actually have 2 of them. One for my lifeport, and one for my implants.

Isn't that interesting that you still get phantom sensation from headlights. Guess some nerves tracks are still in place even when you take off the tops eh.

and I bet it would be convenient sometimes not having to be too 'perky'. Why is it doctors and other people seem to think they know what is best for our own person.....  Glad you are standing your ground for what works for you.

I met a young woman in the elevator at a medical building the other day who had a huge colorful tattoo done over her mastectomy scars. She is still in chemo but is getting implants too. She said she was a DD before. That would be a big change.

Krista, I think your new girls look fabulous! Glad you are free of back pain and glad you had them reduced.

This was prior to 9/11, but when we lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia we had a family friend who had a metal pin in her ankle.

Every three weeks or so she would pop onto a plane to New York, "just to recharge her batteries". Well, she would set the detectives off each time, but, "depending on the attitude of the screener" I would, or would not tell them about my ankle.

Since that innocent time, I wear slip on / off loafers, no wrist watch, no coins, a loose jacket, and carefully packed hand luggage - easilly searched. Now it just takes three hours to clear LAX on a domestic flight.
Driving to San Diego and Las Vegas is actually quicker than flying - and considerably cheaper too, even considering $4.50 per gal gas, and the airlines are wondering about not making a profit.

Stay home and pond!

Cheers,

Mike

This thread reminds me of an incident that happened to me a couple of years ago.  The fetching Mrs. Mikey sent me on an errand to the Post Office to pick up some Breast Cancer Awareness stamps.  I walked up to a rather attractive postal employee, who just happened to be well endowed, and I say, “I need 50 Breast Awareness stamps.”  A moment of silence passes as we stand there looking at each other before I realize what I had asked for and I quickly blurt out, ”Cancer!  Breast CANCER Awareness stamps.”
