The pond and some fish today - pictures
« on: September 05, 2008, 11:16:11 AM »
We've got your Comets, a Shubunkin, Wakins, Ryukins, Telescopes (including a Black Moore) and a Ranchu.  There are even some Frogheads in there that have started to look more like Bubble Eyes.  Maybe it's the deep water that caused their bubbles to swell.

Yes.   (8:-)  Used to be what I'd call a Sarassa Comet.  It was red and white.  Now it's just white and just a Comet.   :teehee:

I like your above ground pond! This is what I'm going to have to do to have a permanent pond. I can't dig where I am without some sort of machinery. Can you tell me about the construction of it?
I was also noticing the lounge chair/bench holding plants in front of the pond. Is there any carving on that piece? It looks a lot like some of the furniture my DH makes at Reed Bros Hand carved furniture.   TIA   Nancy

I absolutely love your pond set-up, looks like a magazine setting.  The fish are gourgous, you have some very nice long fins there, we are breeding towards the longer fins with our goldfish.  And yes your water is very crystal clear!

Thanks everyone for the nice comments.  The pond is still recovering from Ike.  Many of the fish do not seem happy... they are huddling in the corner or swimming side-ways.  We were without power for 12 days and even though we had a generator we couldn't power the pump for the pond.  I did have a large air pump going and did partial water changes every other day but it is obvious the fish suffered.  I'm just hoping the bio bugs bounce back quickly.

I was also noticing the lounge chair/bench holding plants in front of the pond. Is there any carving on that piece? It looks a lot like some of the furniture my DH makes at Reed Bros Hand carved furniture.   TIA   Nancy

Millie...  the bench is an old teak chez lounge that we got years ago.  It has become a plant stand since I don't lounge very much any more.   ;D  No carving...   Gonna go Google Reed Bros now...

Hi Nancy.  Sorry, I missed your question before.

Only a small portion of my pond is above ground.  The construction is similar to a gunite swimming pool.  In fact, it was built by the same company and at the same time as our pool.  The pool is mostly above ground though so I see no reason why you couldn't have a completely above ground pond if you wanted.  You don't want a pool company to design the pond though.  They don't usually understand what's needed.  I had a pond guy design it and work with the pool company.  It has two bottom drains, a skimmer and tpr's (tangential pond returns).  The filter is a Fluidart bead filter and there is a uv also.  It is almost four feet deep and holds 1400 gallons.

Hope this helps.  Good luck with your pond!
Jim
