Victoria Longwood Bloom (updated)
« on: September 15, 2008, 06:53:16 AM »
My Longwood bloomed again last night. This is the first bloom in over a month. The bloom opened better than the first three blooms, and is truly beautiful. I have kept my Longwood a little small, as the pond they are in is only 5' 6" square. The pads are about 20" in diameter. The pics show the bud on Friday night, the bloom with the pads, and the bloom itself.

Annette, did you know that Victorias could be dwarfed with pads only 24" in diameter?

Here are the second night of the bloom pics, taken at 8 pm and 10 pm.  Will post more pictures of the lily's change to pink later.

OMG! That is gorgeous!  I read an article on the Victoria site about a guy in Colombia that grew one in a bathtub.  I assume that means you do a LOT of pruning and keep the pads to a minimum?  Are the thorns as bad as they look?  Do you get torn up pruning it and do fish get hurt on the pads?

Those are great pics.  O0

Krista and I went to Hughes Water Gardens a couple years ago for their evening open house to see theirs bloom but they closed before they opened all the way.

Jonna, I met Kit and Ben in person and noticed a lot of scratches on her legs. They do look worse than saw briers and far worse than blackberry briers. I'm going to try to start some this Winter in a hot house so they will be ready for next Summer

Happy ponding,

Thanks, everyone. First, answers to some of your wuestions. The lily is in an outside above the ground 5.6' X 5.6' pond. I only pruned the pads when they started dying .  I take pruning sheers and cut the pad stem back as close to the plant as I can. I then take a leaf rake and lift the pad out of the water and put the pad into a 5 gallon bucket. Doing this, I do not get stuck by the thorns as often. Yes the thorns are extremely sharp, like very small needles. The thorns cover the plant.
Here are two pics of the bloom before it died. The first was taken at midnight last night, and the other is from 8 am this morning. Notice that the bloom had turned completely pink by the morning.
