Dogs and Pond Parasites

I feel like a bit of a interloper here.  As if it weren't for my dog I would not have sought you out.  My dog has recently become ill I believe that he has become infected with Giardia from drinking the pond water.  I have a large pond that currently has 5 Koi, 5 Shubunkins, 3 goldfish and my best guess is around 50 fry no idea whose babies.  Is there anyway to test the water for Giardia?  If it is Giardia is there anyway to treat the water without harming my fish?  Any info or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Has Giardia been confirmed by your vet?
Is your pond the only place he could have gotten it?  No other ponds or puddles he could have been drinking from?
Is your pond well filtered with that big fish load, 50 babies is a lot.

I don't know if they can test pond water for Giardia....I would think it should be possible. 
My dogs have always lapped up the pond water, I've never had an issue in over 20 years, but it's understocked and well filtered.

We're on our way to the vets with a stool sample this morning.  I am new to this pond business so not sure what you would consider well filtered.  The pond is 30' by 15' and close to 4' deep at the deepest point.  We have 1000 gph pump going to a waterfall that has approxiamately 4 inchs of filter material with another 6 inchs of lava rock.  The water is very clear.  The babies were unplanned and as of yet we have not decided what to do with them.  We have had a drought all summer so no puddles here.

Drinking from a hose is a really good way to get Giardia....  The symptoms of hook worms are really similar to giardia too.

My understanding with respect to giardia is that although it can be transmitted through unclean drinking water it is primarily associated with human or animal feces.  And as we have all seen, dogs love to stick their noses in dog poop or in the butt of another dog....   I personally wouldn't be too concerned about the pond water.

I'm not certain if a uv sterilizer would be enough to kill the bug if it is in your pond water but it is something to consider.

I don't know about giardia, but I do know that one of my dogs gets ill when he drinks pond water.  It took us quite a bit of time to find the problem but now we keep the pond covered with a net.  Only one of my dogs get sick from the water and does get better after being put on a bland diet.
I just think some dogs stomachs are more sensitive because the other 3 are no bothered at all.

That is a strange one. My cat's drink from the pond all the time.   I hope your dog is OK.

You should try to use some .5 water filter for your pond. Your dog should not be drinking that water. You should get your dog into the vet for some medication. Gardiasis is a serious illness in which it has to be cured at once.
