Queen of Siam vivips in aquarium.
« on: September 24, 2008, 12:42:17 PM »
Well I survived the hurricane!  Lost some huge trees, but not on my house, thankfully!  Went w/out electricity for about a week, lost everything in the refrigerator and freezer.  I'm not complaining tho, compared to the gulf, we did great!

I plucked 10 vivip leaves and put them in my aquarium like Sean's suggestion on his web page.  And boy are they growing!  I'll have plenty to share w/ Alfonso, Katfish and Kay.  And whoever else wants to try some.

That looks fabulous, Brenda!  Do you know why some Queen of Siams are vivip and mine is not?

Most of the viviparous waterlilies I have ever grown produce vivips best in the fall and as we are just entering autumn now, perhaps you sill have some time.

I prefer a plantlet please. There was a woman that had a shop near here that sold them for $5.00-10.00 each, depending on the variety. That shop closed about a year ago.

Brenda,  want to trade a Queen of Siam vivip for a Blink vivip?  You might want to grow the vivip on the Blink in your aquarium though...I am having trouble getting mine to do much and I am in Florida where they are outside in a cat litter pan.  I don't have room in my house for an aquarium unless I put it in the garage and park my car outside....

Speaking of vivips..... I decided to trying growing a bunch of tropicals to donate to watergardener group for our May plant sale.  We're non profit and, with our sale & pond tour profits, give grants to public places (schools, parks, cancer center) for watergardens for education & meditation.  I got a bunch (36) Panama Pacific vivips from a club member.  They were already growing roots in his pond, still attached and some just floating around.  So I planted them in 16 oz plastic cups and, 1 week later, the nickel sized leaves of the babies I got are growing their own tiny vivips!  Unbelievable.

My other vivips (Tina, Lindsey Woods) are doing great after a week also.  I am putting them outside in AZ with 120 watt grow lights on from 6:00 pm to 9:00 am.  In other words, they are getting 24 hours of light and growing substantial roots in a week.  I jsut got Queen of Siam and expect it to do just as well.  Once these babies get potted I will cut the lights but heat the water to 70 and see what happens.

I will be gone from home until the end of October, but I would be willing to swap some Panama Pacific (and maybe others) for vivips I don't have.  I would keep the first plant of each type and then donate any others to the club.  I don't know how you do this.  Can you send babies and keep them alive?

If you respond to this, don't be surprised if you don't hear from me for awhile.  I only have an ancient unreliable laptop and I am unsure of the hotel capabilities where I am going in Lincoln, NE.  I am flying to MN, picking up my 94 year old mom, driving her to NE and spending about 10 days there with her at the German Wirehaired Pointer National Show & Field Trials.

I never ever had a queen of siam form any babies. They are the hardest I have ever owned to get to propigate this way.

Hi all!

Hope everyone survived the winter.  I am so ready for spring!  I'm solar powered and when it's cloudy all the time, I'm just plain cranky!

My experiment w/the Queen of Siam vips didn't go well at all.  I really thought that I could get lots of babies as I've grown lilies in my aquarium before.

The vips seemed like they were growing great and then they'd turn into mush, practically overnight.

So I'm sorry to say no babies.

If anyone wants to try themselves, I'll glady share leaves when summer comes.

And, of course, I'll keep trying!

Sorry to hear the experiment didn't go well...I guess the Blink vivips I sent you didn't make it either then?  Oh, well.  I noticed the other day that some of the blink vivips that I neglected to do anything with this winter were still there outside floating around in my small pond/tubs.  They are pretty much the same size as before almost as if they were in dormancy.

Maybe you could send me just the leaves from your Queen of Siam instead, since none of the babies survived, and I'll just let it float around in my pond/tubs and see what they do?  Let me know....

Hey Brenda.  Mine didn't make it either.  I tried to grow all of my plants in an indoor pond with a grow light.  I had a case of the mush.  Next winter, I will leave my plants in the pond.  Lesson learned.  Thanks for the plants.

when In try to start vip leaves outside I leave  them on the plant. Or if you cut the leaves off try putting them upside down in a shady place in a tub or bowl.

Scott, maybe they'll do better for you!  And anyone else that wants to try!

Vickie, good idea.  I'm going to try them outside this summer, just for fun!  Wished I had started earlier last year.
