Petrichor!!
« on: September 29, 2008, 11:00:21 AM »
"The pleasant smell that accompanies the first rain after a dry spell."

We had thunder and lightning and rain for the first time in a veeeerrrrrry longtime.  Our dry spell cannot be relieved by the spots of rain we've had this morning but to walk outside and smell that fresh moist air.... o(:-)

Just learned this word last night and got a chance to use it today for reals!

 Howell,

Jackanapes is the fatty tissue found just behind the neck on a male +300 pounds.
in a sentence...When he chews that jackanapes makes his shirt tag pop in and out.

Poltroon is an army located on the boarder of a war that ended 3 weeks before.
in a sentence...The leader of the Poltroon said, " We will take that desert by boat."

perspicacity is the affects of a overheated car in a traffic jam at a big city. Originated in L.A.
in a sentence...The time is 4:30 on this tuesday afternoon. Traffic is at a standstill and the perspicacity is a 98%. Hope you wore extra  deodorant.

Blooter is a womans breast immediately after enlargement surgery.
in a sentence...Although those blooters are tender and discolored, you will love the end result.

Just a few scattered drops here at home but earlier in the day I was on the 91 freeway and it was raining tigers and chihuahuas.

Thanks, reddad35..
Do perspicacy and perspicacity have the same meaning?, if so can they be used like: whenever you say, "He was talking with some kind of perspicacity".
Mikey, haha tigers and chihuahuas, I have heard some people here in mexico saying, "it is raining just like if the sky is going to fall upon us", but I seriously go by the chihuahas and tigers, those chihuahuas can be expensive so, I won't mind, by getting my hand outta the window and grabbing one, lol

Reddad - You had me going too.
We used to play the dictionary game - One person pick out a word then the others have to make up a definition. Could be quite funny. Only word I still remember from back then is pusillanimous, meaning spineless / moral coward.

There was a little book I saw some years back that invented words we do not have in English, but have the concept of. One word was Haxby -"Any garden implement whose exact use is not immediately clear". Another, and I cannot remember the word, was the verb for the cleaning up we do around the house just before the maid comes in.
There were 100's of these gems.

Cheers,

Mike

 lol Very funny Reddad!

As a kid my siblings and I made up words we use so no one could understand us.  We still use them today and even our kids use them.  ;D

Petrichor unfortunately does not happen often enough here.  We enjoyed one day of it and a day later now suffer the heat/humidity!  :(

Well I may be bloviating here, but Petrichor is the best word I've learned in a long time. It explains every sensation I've ever felt about a fresh spring rain. Don't get why the word is not more poetic though.  :)

My previous favorite words have been Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy and opthamologic steroid...among others.

Did anyone yell, "HOOK UP!"  (for you non-fisher persons out there, "hook up" is what you call out on a party fishing boat when you hook up a game fish and it starts to run) ........  I only ran a short distance before I got suspicious and spit out the hook......but none the less my mouth still hurts....  :D  ....along with my pride....  ;D

I think that is a combo of Shakespear and George Carlin. That might just be me or maybe your accent.  lol lol I tell you this much Howell, If you try to use these words in your neighborhood it will take years to overcome.  :D

BTW I love the smell of rain, "petrichor" also. In the forum world we call this topic a hijacked topic.  {-)

Hahaha I know reddad35 you did get it, I had a teacher that use to put the art thou with the is after the thou, so that's what I did?, let me tell you something about her background.
She is from mexico, I was in english class with her,(she thinks she is so good because she went to london) and I told her she was wrong but no she wasnt't(she said), she has been reading english literature from a long time such as shakespeare, or how ever you spell it.
So who is wrong now?lol LOL
And I said, look I do not care how ya'll talk like in england, but in arkansas english is much better if you do not believe watch the movie, oh brother where art thou?.lol
The second one is mine, I'm trying to learn antique english(the one she is teaching) such as YE, THY, THOU and some others, but I seriously think I will do better myself.
But I think it will be more like Shakespear and George Lopez. lol
And how do you know my accent have you heard me? I think it is just you.lol
Hahaha nobody here speaks lots of english so they won't understand a thing I'm saying, well I have some english friends and I have tried to talk like them but guess what?, it just does not come out naturally.
lol  :D
Can someone help me with this one, what's the meaning of THUS?
