Something pooped in my pond!
« on: November 02, 2008, 07:43:27 AM »
I can't believe it, but something pooped in my pond!  I have a few tubs out that have tadpoles living in them.  The water is clear until yesterday I wondered why one of them is yellowish brown and dirty.  So I look into it and it looks like there is something falling apart in the bottom of the tub that is an orange yellow color.  I suspect either poop or barf.  I figure it could be feral cats, possum, or racoon.  Its a pretty big clump of something down there.  I recently found one of my kiddie pools thrashed around too, so I suspect a racoon in the area even though its pretty urban and I've never seen one in my neighborhood.

Anyone know what type of animal will poop in a body of water?
My next female cat will be called "Whata Lily"!

OH MIKEY!!! :P

Raccoons have soft poop that ends up in a kind of flattened out cone shaped pile. I don't know what it would look like in the water.

 lol lol lol

Esther- kinda looks like as you describe...pretty gross.  I don't think I'm gonna be putting my hand in that tub.  I'll wait until the tadpoles are grown and throw the whole thing out.

A while back, we had a thread on poop, and I learned that you could Google "(insert the type of animal) droppings image" and it would bring up photos poop from all sorts of critters.
Maybe you could try adding the words, "in water."

Mickey - that was FUNNY!

raccoon.

cats and opossums aren't going to climb into a pond to poop in it.

Is this typical behavior?  It seems to defy logic in that why would an animal contaminate its water source?  I just don't get it...

I certainly can't tell you the answer to that...because I have a parrot that poops on his toys (unintentionally) and then chews it off when he plays with them.  I know, ewwww....gross!! lol

Wonder how he knows where it is? Does he have a sense of smell?

They don't have that much sense, GreenThumb.  They eat, and next thing you know, nature is calling, and they relieve themselves right where they are.

It's probably not a sanitation issue with them out in the wild, as they move around all day / night long, and probably don't use the same water source over and over again.

Now that I think of it, my turtles poop in their water bowl all the time.  When something goes in, it stimulates the system, and then something has to come out.

And, not to be gross, but turtles do eat animal droppings - theirs and other animals.   :o  There must be nutrition in it for them, or they wouldn't do it.

Ain't Mother Nature just a mystery??

As far as raccoon sanitation; my wife and I were camping just to wake to noises outside our tent. I shined the flashlight and found a raccoon holding the lid of our cooler up above his head with one hand while rooting throughit with the other. The next night I heard water running hours after we went to sleep. Again, with the flashlight I found a raccoon. This time the coon had turned on the spigot and was washing his hands. I could not beleive they were this smart. I guess a country, non camping friendly coon wouldn't mind pooping in a pond. I will tell you the 2 I met that night would ask for charmin if I stayed another night.

I assume you are referring to Rocky?  He doesn't really go after the poop on his toys, he just picks up a toy and starts chewing it apart - picking off the poop is like when we pop bubbles in bubble wrap!  It keeps him busy for a while.  lol

SueS,
Sounds like he doesn't think much of you either.... lol  (sorry  8))

No really, I'm in the 'burbs and we have 'coons and they like to bring "foreign" things to my pond to wash before eating them.  I have found many unidentifiable things in there - I try not to look too closely when I scoop it out.....ick
