Palm trees: challenge to palmophiles, can you ID?
« on: October 17, 2006, 04:27:42 AM »
I have a collection of rare/uncommon palms in the greenhouse. All are pretty easily identifiable by their leaves. Can you ID? No prize, just respect!
#1--this one is VERY VERY rare.

#2: This is another "whole leaf" or "undivided leaf" palm that is quite rare.

#3: this palm is uncommon. It is part of a moderately large group of fan palms that includes both divided leaf and undivided leaf forms. Clue: Most come from Vanuatu.

My guess and it is only a guess is that it's one of the undivided leaves and likely a
Silver Joey Palm, Johannesteijsmannia  magnifica  (love anything named "Magnifica)
The last one looks like a Raphis, but thier origin doesn't fit.
They are beaitiful!
I suspect i am wrong on all counts, but had to give it a shot.

Lillith what zone are you in?

Close Jerry but no cigar. I do have a Joey magnifica, also have some Joey Diamonds, but this palm is MUCH more rare than those.
The small fan palm is a member of a genus that might not be much grown in So Cal. Its not all that common in Florida either, although a very few of its members are quite hardy

Okay I give. I am glad to know that there are at least 2 people even INTERESTED in palms on the site though.
#1&2 are Pelagodoxa henryana
#3 is Marojejya darianii
#4 is Licuala distans.

SULLIVAN'S PALM...now Jerry that's a rare Chamaedorea! I know of one souce for a seedling, if they still have any.

I have some Chamae's...all pretty usual...ernestii-Augustii, geonomiformis, metallica, plumosa, oblongata, radicalis, microspadix...I love Chamaes!
