I need pond liner
« on: December 02, 2008, 07:31:35 PM »
I want to expand my pond, but liner is pricey around here.  I checked a few roofing supply stores, craigslist, Home Depot, etc, but they seem to be around the same price.  Any advice?  Please don't tell me to stop being cheap.  ;D  I'm just thrifty  ;)

Nothing wrong with being thrifty, cause that leaves more money to fill the pond with.   ;D  I have got 95% of my creek rock free.  Buying and trades on here have got me my plants.  Fish here and there until I found those on a bulletin board at a pet shot, someone was moving....etc.

Good luck finding some resonable.

Kim

Ponds are like patato chips, ya just can't have one.

check pondliner.com and also justliners.com they are both really reasonable priced...I have found that lowes and home depot here just carry the thin liners....I go for 45 mil EPDM if it were me....

Landley.. I bought a huge roll of 45 ml from a roofing company.  I got 50 ft x 50 ft for under 200.00.

ALso you might call around to roofing contractors.  I have gotten huge pieces they had thrown away in the trash after removing them from roofs.  The ones I have gotten have a bunch of glue/guk on the one side but I just put that side down against the dirt.  They are my lotus ponds :)

is the debate about roof liner and pond liner still open?  I remember on some other site that people were saying that roof liner is one process different from what pond liner goes through and that there are chemicals that can hurt fish.  Is this true for any roof liners or just certain brands?  If you get a Firestone Roof Liner as opposed to "Joes Roof Liner", is there a difference?  The caveat to this is whether the warning is so that people who sell "pond" liner can make more money off of you?

There are always people who will say "I have roof liner and never had a problem" but I have seen the flip side to that as well.

just curious...

There's a guy named Darron Bryant in the "Dealer" section who sold me my Firestone liner (and all other pond equip) at an incredible price...but he doesn't seem to answer calls or emails anymore so I don't know if he's still in the business.

excellent question....I've heard both sides of the debate too....I'm still not brave enough to test the theory....I have always bought firestone fish safe liner....I do line my "sale tanks" with Sand n sun  pool liners" this last summer I lost 300-400 baby koi because I couldn't find the Sand n Sun liners anymore and just bought the first 15' pool liner I could find...within hours of putting in the koi they started going belly up and jerking around.....over the next 7 days I lost all but 8 of them....the only thing it could have been was the liner.....lesson learned I'm not buying just any ol' liner again  :'(.....

O0  Bought plain old roof liner (45 mil Firestone 20X50 - .36 cents/sq.ft back then) from a building supply company, and its been working for 5 years now, no fish loss, except to predation...  No holes either...

same here.. no problems at all with mine.  very clear water, fishes are good.. I had one scare with my koi getting a spot but he healed up just fine with no treatment.  Mine is the 45 ml firestone.  I had also heard that they are possibly treated with something to keep the algae off but mine has developed the nice health coat of good algae.  maybe it could be a combination of things that makes it work for some and not others???  I am heavyily aerated, heavily filtered and two skippies and no runoff of any kind to polute or poision.

I have used 45mil RV roofing in one of my troughs. It was for plants and everything did fine. I even had gambusia in there for mosquito control.

I've actually heard of someone using an old billboard for a pond liner. Not sure of what they are made of but it holds water, for now. Of course, for a temporary pond, construction grade polyethylene works. Just consider that one sheet = one year.
Happy ponding,

Roof liner is treated with a powder to keep it from sticking to itself and it will kill fish. That said my ponds are done with roof liner, I layed it out and washed it several times with a powerwasher and let it dry in the sun and weather while we dug the ponds. Then we put in a few canary goldfish first to make sure to the pond was complety safe when we filled it (having to catch them was fun, should have just filled part ways).
And Lawanna, pool liners are treated also as are kiddy pools now a days. I think they treat them with a antifungal agent.  It is always a good ideal to rinse and let set in the sun or weather a few days.

landey, I happened to notice on my winter news letter from AZ ponds that they have a special on firestone 45 mil pondguard on several sizes that work out to 30 cents per sq ft. plus shipping. I have found in my purchases on line to one of my favorite lowest cost and top quality products. Shipping cost is easy to determine as you place your order.

Hope this helps cause I'm a firm beliver in shopping for pond deals too.   Fm3

An aged pool liner would be okay. I'm waiting on an above ground pool liner from a 27' pool. I saw an ad looking for someone to install the new liner and I emailed them wanting to know if I could have the old liner. They said that it was mine as soon as they get it out. I'm going to use it for an in-ground pond. :)
Happy ponding,
