« on: January 07, 2009, 11:19:23 AM »
for Kevin and Dawn Burgess. Braeden's doctor just called Kevin at work and asked him to come to the hospital right away as "things didn't look good."

Pete and I are staying at their house right now taking care of their other kids.

Esther I've not been around much lately but they have been in my thoughts and prayers but I will say an extra prayer and have my Mom put them on the church prayer chain.

I've got some reading to do, I didn't know that lil' Braeden was in the hospital....

Hugs to all,
Bonnie

I, too, have been praying for Kevin and Dawn and Braedon and his brothers and sister, and also for you and your family.  I continue to check in here regularly to read the news always hoping it will be good news.  I surely hope things are ok today.  You are all in my thoughts.

Kevin came home about 10 and said that Braeden is having trouble breathing + in terrible pain. They can't sedate him as much as they would like because of the breathing problem. Tomorrow morning there is a planning meeting scheduled to determine what is to follow. They are talking about continuing radiation as it can help with the pain. There is also talk about an injection of some sort that kills the nerves causing the pain. So at this point pain control is the main thing.

There was a meeting this morning scheduled at the hospital of the medical team, but I still haven't heard anything, and it's almost noon. Guess I'd better get off the internet as they have dial up.

Esther,
I haven't been posting much here lately.  Just want to let you know that I haven't stopped praying for Braeden and the entire family.  As OP said, I really don't know what to say because my heart is just so heavy hearing this news.  I will be sending extra P&PT.

I really don't know much more. Kevin came home around 8 so didn't get back on line after that as he needed to use the computer and I was doing laundry.

Braeden is resting better and the pain is a little less. There were three options presented to K & D. They are rather experimental and untried on children. One is to use Lidocain that you may have heard on in connection with dentistry. Another is invasive and the one where they "try" to kill the affected nerves but that sounds like a "crap shoot" because they don't seem to be able to direct the treatment with a certainty it will attack the nerves needing the treatment. Another is some sort of pump but again is invasive and they are trying to avoid more surgical stuff as his blood counts are pretty much zero and he has no natural ability to fight infection. Speaking of infection, there may be some in his lungs. I'm not sure if that is why he is having trouble breathing.

So they are going to try this Lidocain stuff today +  in a drip and then at some point stop it or slow the amount to see how it is working or if there are some ill effects. The main goal is pain control.

There is a possibility of doing another stem implant is still on the table. They have enough for two. Kevin suggested to do one seeing he's basically at the same place he was prior to the 100 day isolation and has no ability to fight anything.

We were just talking and this road is so hilly. One day things are looking up and the next he hits bottom. There are so many things the med staff is trying to juggle and so many things that are not certain in his treatment. One treatment or drug is given to help one thing but it has an ill effect on something else an needs treatment to fix what that has made go wrong. Such a balancing act!!!!

Dawn just texted that he had a relatively peaceful night.

So hard for little Breaden and all his family that is suffering along with him.  I sure hope the doctors can find a way to give him relief.  Hope the Lidocain will work without causing additional problems.

Still keeping you all in my thoughts.   emm

Hugs, prayers and more POWER of positive thinking. . . O0

Lidocaine is basically Novacaine.
They use it for most local anesthesias.

I even have Lidocaine cream (EMLA) leftover in a tube from when I used to put it on my lifeport when it got irritated from all the puncturing during chemo...
plus those Lifeport access needles (like a huge thumbtack with 'butterfly wing' grips) are big and thick and feel like ice picks.
A little EMLA cream put on the port and covered with saran wrap (only works while liquid), a half hour ride to the Oncs and I couldn't feel a thing when they accesssed my port. 8)

I'm glad they're numbing his pain, and making him more comfortable.
Peace to all  ... Joyce
