I learned my lesson.... Updated!
« on: January 30, 2009, 10:34:58 AM »
A few years back our anti-virus protection subscription on my pc was set to "automatic renewal".  I have since learned of a "better" anti-virus program and decided not to renew.  I received an e-mail about a month ago from my anti-virus provider that my subscription was about to expire.  That e-mail gave me the option of clicking onto a link that would cancel my renewal.  I canceled my renewal and printed out the confirmation.

This morning I received from Trend a "Thank You For Renewing Your Subscription" and was advised they had charged my credit card....  >:(- Arghhhh!  So I first tried canceling on-line without success and ended up waiting on hold for ten minutes to speak to a human...  I was assured  ::) by a Trend rep that the charge would be refunded and my subscription canceled.  I have no doubt my subscription will be canceled but why do I think my refund might be overlooked....

I called Visa and again waited ten minutes to speak to a human.  I was advised that at this point no charge has been made.....  We'll see......  In the mean time, no more "automatic renewals" for me....

I'm retired and thus I have the time for such nonsense but I don't know how those of you who work manage to deal with such bull pucky....

I just got an offer in the mail for a new magazine (by the cooking show hosts of the Food Network on TV), and it was only $10, so I signed up immediately.  Then I noticed the very fine print in the most inconspicuous corner, saying that it would automatically renew each year unless I told them to stop.

They call that a "convience" to me, the subscriber.  Hah!  More like a way to wrangle more money from people without their realizing it.

I made sure to put a note on my calendar, for next year, on the renewal date, so I can decide for myself whether or not I want the subscription to continue.

I may love the magazine and want to continue with it.  But I don't see why they think we need to be tricked into renewing.  It's sneaky, and it's just wrong.

You have lived a happy life if you are just learning this now Mike.

I find that anything that is "free for 30 days" or "no cost for trying our service" always has the automatic renewal built in, and some are way easier to cancel than others.

My cable guy, during a recent house call, was offering three months of HBO free, and couldn't believe I was not interested.

American Express cards and their endless magazines have been a perpetual nightmare, and it took me three years to ultimately cancel the L.A. Times.

Now, like you, I am gun shy.

Cheers,

Mike

Whatever happened to the old way of cancelling something...just letting it lapse?  It works for auto insurance, doesn't it?

Last year I was in a discount store (Value City) and they asked me if I wanted to sign up for their rewards program.  Thinking it is like the Kroger plus card, where I would get an extra 10% off or whatever the brochure said I readily signed up.  What they did was forward my debit card to one of those membership clubs that only charge you $69 per year to save money on stuff you don't need or have to drive 50 miles to get.  Anyway, when they put that charge through, it was right before payday and caused my account to go into the negative, and I was charged an NSF fee.  I called to cancel, and told them that what they had done was illegal...amounting to credit card fraud and ID theft and that I would file charges.  They told me it would take a few days for the credit to come through (sounds like Jerry's ordeal) and I told them it must be put through today, because I was charged a $31 NSF fee.  They did, and luckily I work for the bank where I have my checking account, and they reversed the fee.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of automatic renewals on anything, I want to make the decision at the time, what is right for me, and not have to worry about calling and cancelling......If anyone offers me those free trials that they say you just have to call and cancell I say no right away as most likely I will forget to call and cancell.  Just give me notice I'm about to have to renew and let me make the decision.  To bad Mikey that they went ahead and renewed on you anyway...what a hassle, I would have been livid, and even more so if I then had to sit and wait on the phone for so long.

There ought to be an ombudsman that could interced on things like this.  As you know I must wait til ,April for Globat to give me a refund.  You know they won't, and Even M/C thinks it's ploy to use up my 60 day allowed time for disputes.

I'd rather go through the automated teller.  I'm very impatient when it comes to customer service.  I was on the phone with a representative from a wireless network provider.  She had me doing things over and over for 1.5 hrs.  I was so upset, but played it cool.  I guess it depends on the person you talk to.

I had an online service that I set up NOT for auto-renewal and I guess by magic it was done anyway.  The company said they wouldn't refund it because I used it past the renewal date (I set it up months ago not to renewal and totally forgot about it until the credit card bill showed up).  I said that was fine and that I would have the CC company do a charge back for an unauthorized charge.  They even used an expired card number and the CC let them so between the two of them they will see no money from me.

I had automated renewals too.

My father in law had trouble with AOL for over a year. When he gave me my first computer he made me promise to never sign up with them. I had no intention of it.

My computer had been running slow for some time and I often wondered if it was the antivirus protection running in the background causing the problem.  It seemed like my pc was always busy doing something.  I had read or heard that some antivirus programs take up a lot of RAM memory and slow the pc down.  After I allowed my antivirus service to expire I kept getting updates from them which I thought was weird.  I left the expired program on the pc because I had not yet received the cd for the new antivirus program which I had ordered (NOD32).  For the last two days the pc had been extremely slow and often times my mouse wasn't working right.  I replaced the batteries in the mouse and that had no affect.  I swapped the mouse out for another one that I knew worked and it had the same problems.  I was now growing very paranoid and suspicious of the updates I was getting from my expired program because the most recent problems began after I allowed the program to expire.

Yesterday my NOD32 antivirus arrived.  I immediately uninstalled my old antivirus and I installed the NOD32 and ran a scan.  No viruses.  However, the pc is running fantastic!  I no longer hear my pc running in the background; no more mouse problems; no more delays or slowness after clicking on something.....

So, have you bought a new computer that comes with automatic subscriptions to software and services that total about $300 for the first year -- unless you cancel them within the first 30 days.  I told the salesman that I didn't want any of that crud on the computer, which of course sent him into a tailspin.  The store manager went through a lot of truly painful gyrations assuring me that my request was simply impossible to meet, until I headed for the door.  Ah, well, yes of course we can remove all the "free trials" and "start up services".

So, "Great says I, do it, print it all out, provide your signed assurance that it has all been removed, and I'll be back tomorrow."  Got one bill for continuing service, and took it back to the store manager for him to handle.  They'd probably shoot me if I drove back into their parking lot.
I'm here on a "Free Membership", the rest of you simply aren't paying to be here.  No, it isn't the same thing.

Norton and McAfee are huge resource hogs that slow down your computer.

I have been using free AVG and now AVAST antivirus for years now with no problems and much less resources being used.

Speaking of AVG, it stopped hounding me to upgrade a few months ago, but still seems to download new patterns just the same.

I'm with you LeeAnne on the AVG.  I used to have viruses all the time with both of the other packages, because they would not update or malfunction, where it would have to be uninstalled.  You can only do that so many times and it fails to recognize you as a paying customer.  I became so frustrated and tired of dishing out dollars, I uninstalled both and went with free AVG and I run a free firewall too.  Haven't had a problem since (knocking on wood  ;) )

AVG here too. Works well.
A gal I know raved about "System mechanic" only 20.00   ok I got it.  I see next yeat they want a 39.00  fee.  The 39.00 was a surprize, she never mentioned that.
It does seem good.
