Best car you ever owned (Apologies to Mikey)
« on: February 02, 2009, 08:55:33 AM »
I am kicking this thread off by saying my Prius.  My second choice is the Wife's Prius.
Her's is a 2003 almost pre "green."  neither have ever had a repair o(:-)
My days of carrying a huge load of fishing tackle have past.  It has plenty of room for my Trikke.

My current Jeep Sahara Unlimted.  @O@ :2thumbs:
Got hit by a deer, took it like a tank and kept my family safe.
Would have demolished my old PT Cruiser, or come through the window and killed someone.
(happens here all the time, deer going through windows and causing deadly accidents, deadly injuries)
It's the safest car I've ever driven, and that is what counts for me.
I don't give a hoot about economy. That's not what is going to keep me and my family safe.
Also can drive through 3' deep water during floods, no problem. (found out the hard way, but at least now I know it can handle it)

And my car is 'Green'. lol

Also has 4WD, absolutely necessary for my profession and for snowy/icy conditions.

I don't want to sub economy for safety/sturdiness/strength.
Seems like you either get one or the other.
Tell me one little economy car that could have withstood a side impact driver door deer hit like my Jeep did, without budging.  ;)

All in all, my car symbolizes me, and what I've gone through, what it takes to stay alive.

Peace to all  ... Joyce

I had a 1988 Merkur Scorpio. I still miss that car. It was only imported into the U.S. for two years, so eventually parts became impossible to find.

It was a full power, full leather, German luxury car, yet one could make a Home Depot run, and the back could open all the way up and carry major stuff. RIP

Cheers,

Mike

The Prius is well rated for safety.  No Deer or floods here.  We can use a flood or two.

Toyota Pick Up, don't remember the year, but it was the first and only vehicle I've ever bought new.  Had it for 14 years, and still ran great at the end.  Never a major repair, although it did eat up batteries uncommonly fast.

Toyotas are known for their dependability, and, even when it was 10+ yrs old, people would literally follow me on the road, and then into what ever building I was going to, and hand me their contact info and say, "If ever you are ready to sell, even if it's 5 years from now, please call me."

Happened more than coupla times.

Wasn't really mine but hubby had it when we got married so it was mine-by-marriage. A '69 Mercury Cougar!!! A real muscle car!!! He has regretted every day since he sold it. He actually almost got it back a few years ago. Found it one day when he was driving down the road parked in someone's driveway. He had to stop and see if it was his. Sure enough, that was it. They weren't interested in selling at the time. But it wasn't long until it was gone from there. Then he saw it again in a field and went after it there but couldn't locate an owner. Then it vanished from there. I'm sure if he ever sees it again he will track it down.

Well, that would depend on the "why".  :) I loved my '76 Camaro. It was slick, it was cool, it was a gas hog.
I loved my '86 Mercury Cougar. It was slick, it was cool, and it was pretty darned efficient at highway speeds.
I loved my '93 Honda. Great on gas, very uncool, yucky upholstery.

I love my current Honda Odyssey. I can carry anything in that puppy. Sheetrock, washing machines, ovens, beech stuff, whatever.  ;D It's a beauty.

My 1992 Pontiac Grand Am GT.  It has a High Output Quad 4 engine and has 163,000 miles on it, purchased it new with 134 miles on it.  Unfortunately it was totalled in a accident 6 months ago, otherwise I'd be driving it today.  I never hesitated driving it on any trip, and would have driven it clear across the country in a heartbeat.  It was a rather rare car in that most of the GT's were V6 automatics, but mine was the Quad 4 5 speed.  I think only about 5% of the GT's were sticks.  I am bummed that I have to give up this car  :'( :'( :'(

I loved my first car, Betsy Camaro, a 1968 Rally Sport but my best car was Betsy Corolla a 1999 Toyota Corolla I bought new. Sadly someone hit me in 2002 and slaughtered her and did me permanent damage.

I've never yet had a Toyota die a natural death. My 81 Corolla wagon was hit and totaled. My 87 Tercel Coupe was hit and totaled too. Betsy Camaro was hit and totaled too.

Please cross your fingers that my current 03 Corolla does not share their fate. I don't think I can take another wreck.

NONE of these "accidents" were my fault, all the other parties paid out, well documented that they weren't my fault. But, they all counted against me in court with the Big One in 2002. None of them paid enough to compensate for what I lost and for the daily pain I experience.

My favorite when I was younger was also my worst: 1969 Triumph GT6+...it was highly suggested that I carry a spare transmission when I bought the car!

A few years ago, my favorite was my 1979 Toyota Corona, which I bought in stock form and was afraid the car wouldn't even make it home, so I had someone follow me.
It went from this:

To this:

...but then I got another car and it's become my favorite:

...and is getting this transplant soon:

I've got to say it's my 25th Anniversary Edition Camaro Z28.  I have had many cars and this is by-far my favorite.  I love to take the t-tops off in the summer and go for a ride up the canyon.  It gets good fuel mileage for a V-8 Corvette engine and it certainly gets me down the road. I will never sell or trade-in this car.

My 2nd favorite is my 1976 Triumph TR-6 Roadster...I don't have a pic but it's in my garage.  Never selling it either!

When we first married and had few possesions we bought a near new 47 Dodge fluid drive.
We spent 6 months towing a mini trailer around the Unites States.  I painted signs along the way.
we joined a circus in Florida, left them at Richmond VA, then off to Philly, DC and Niagra falls. Slowly worked our way back to Califorinia.
I don't know that it was a great car, but it saw us through nicely. Funny we had no heater let alone A/C.  At that age it didn't matter.
We knew we would never do it again.

I would have to say its a toss up between the Eagle SX4 that we had right after we got married and the 1999 Mitsubishi Mirage we still own.
I LOVE the SX4. It would go anywhere and I felt confident with it on slick winter roads.
The Mirage has been an absolute trooper. We have done basic maintenance to it and no major repairs since we bought it brand new. Its so dependable even with 240,000+ miles on it. :)

Wow tough question and what are the criteria:

Most dependable - my old dodge dart with the slant 6...I couldn't kill that car not to mention all of the dating memories!  My current 2000 Acura TL hasn't had any problems at 132+K miles

Best drive - My special eddition TR-6 (1976).  This car was just plain old fun to drive.  It hugged the turns and had so much torque nothing could beat it off the line.

Power - Anybody remember the Maurader, I think they put a rocket engine in that baby!  I hit Mach 1 on the Florida Turnpike on my college commute from Miami to Gainesville.

Sexist car - I still maintain the 1966 jaguar E-type convertible is one of my favorites, unfortunately I never owned one of these 12 cylinder babies, but I'm allowed to drool.
