Last week my DD and I tried to beat the rain and enjoy a picnic lunch at the Getty Center in Los Angeles.  We managed to set up a blanket on the grassy slope overlooking the Central Garden before big drops of rain and clouds rolled in.  We ended up eating our sandwiches under our own umbrellas on a bench still over looking the Central Garden.

Visiting the permanent and new exhibits was nice but I enjoyed the gardens the best.  Since I have been weeding and replanting my own garden it was interesting to see what the Getty gardeners were planting in their winter garden.  Every season has a different look.  This is my first visit in the winter.

Lots of photos....so I hope you will enjoy!

I love hellebores but mine don't seem to grow very large.  I am fascinated by succulents and would love to make a big addition of them in my garden.

The complementary arrangements here are beautiful!

In the 4th photo I wonder what plant that is on the lower left with the sharp looking dandylion leaves?

The garden path to the Central Garden is a zig-zag path that crosses over a stream.  The planners made little bridges over the water flow with different obstructions or falls in the flow to create different sounds of the water pattern.

Seemed like there was a new view of plants at every angled turn.

Arriving in the Central Garden we see the usual structures and formation.  Most of the plants are bare but they are still here because of the shapes and colors of their "bareness."

I really like the red twigs.  That would add some dimension to my winter garden.  ;)

Annette, great photos of the Getty garden on a "winter's day" in L.A....I especially like the shot of the waterfall and azalea maze looking back up the hill toward the Center.

Been to the Getty numerous times and I also love the gardens the best.  It is so amazing that this place is available to anyone for FREE!  What a gift.

Glad to see many have been to the Getty.  I've seen your photos too and it's nice to see the changes of the seasons in their gardens.  We need to take advantage of this generous gift.  I know I do my best!

More photos I didn't have a chance to load.....enjoy!

There are many plants I would love to get into my garden.  But I don't have room  :(  But sure would love to know the names of some.  I thought there use to be name plates on the plants but couldn't find any on the new blooms.

Love tulips but they only come up once and then I have to replant....too much work for me.  Plus too hot to have the bloom last longer than a couple of days.  Another  :(

Amazing center ring maze over water in the Central Garden.

In the winter I can see all the fine structures used for vine-type plants.

Absolutely love the Cactus Garden that is perched over a big drop dead view.  Even though most of the cactus have thorns galore it is a soothing view.

After a few hours of touring the art exhibits and garden we got a view of the traffic going home!!!!  :o :o :o :P  OOOHHHH NNOOOO!!!!  See the long line of headlights?  They are going my way!

It was raining on and off, hard and lightly.  Needless to say Angelenos do not know how to drive in the rain.  Growing up on the East Coast doesn't make me any better though.  The white smokey plume is the steam generated by the Getty Center's machinery.  But the view of the bumper to bumper non moving traffic was a little cause for concern.  It only took a little bit over 3 hours to park all the way home.   :o  On a good day it only takes less than an hour to get home from the Getty.

You mean no cuttings found their way into your purse? {:-P;;

Purple plant?  Are you referring to the oxalis?

The Getty is so massive that one really needs to spend a couple of days there.  There are still areas I have not yet seen because I get distracted and want to visit their gardens.....  Somewhere there is a documentary about how they built the Getty and I suggest that in order to really appreciate the architecture and walkways visitors should see that documentary first.

The traffic in that area is horrible.......

Mikey!  What cuttings?!!!  Nawww....don't have the guts!

When the Getty Center was first designed I had my sights geared toward them on all the details and design.  The architect firm I worked for back then had some interest in the deisgn but didn't get chosen  :'(  Absolutely love the limestone buildings.  The architect also built a house for himself nearby just so he could work full-time on the Getty.

It's this plant I can't think of the name but once you mention it I'll recognize it.  Help this ol' fogged head.

I saw that thistle-like plant in bloom at the Huntington last summer but it had no marker name.......  Hmmmm, now that I think about it I'm thinking that some seeds may have found their way into my pocket.....  I better start looking for the envelope I put them in....  Thanks for the reminder.

Julles the Getty Center Central Garden isn't all that large if you compare it to other parks but they sure know how to pack in all the punches to attract visitors.

Ruth, I only wish lived closer to the Center!

Can't find globe thistle anywhere here.... :P  :(
