I see lily pads!
« on: February 25, 2009, 05:49:44 AM »
Topped off ponds yesterday because we've had so little rain & noticed that I have pads starting to emerge.  A couple of the hardies even have some at the surface  :D  Spring is almost here which means dividing time needs to start soon.  Still need to empty & clean my biggest pond, catch all of the shubunkin, & refill it.  Lots of winter clean up to do ... maybe ponders need to write to Mike at Dirty Jobs & tell him about all the muck & fish poo ponders have to clean up, LOL.  ;)

My Phonda Kay appears to have grown from one corm to four!
And all of them have little leaves.

You mentioned dividing lilies ...

Curious.... I have one that has, well, I don't know what you call them, but new starts coming from the roots but away from the main plant, in the soil, and at least one is spilling out of the pot.  I wasn't really keen on repotting lilies this spring, so, the question is, what happens if you don't divide and repot?

Julles, don't ask me how I know the answer to your question about not dividing lilies. But mine jumped the pot and continued to put down roots and put up flowers. It didn't seem to mind that the roots weren't in soil.

Save some for me, Kat!!  I tried to over winter my tropicals.  Didn't work.  I should have left them in my pond.  Lesson learned.  I'll send you a PM.

I have a hardy with buds.  haven't gotten in the pond to see the label so don't know which one it is.  All my tropicals survived this year because i took them out and put them in a 5' diameter x 1' deep kiddie pool with a couple of aquarium heaters.  I covered them at night with another kiddie pool.  I'm excited that it seemed to work for all 9 tropicals!  @O@  Casey

I should start seeing some pretty soon. Right now all I have is pea soup. ::) The spring algae bloom is early this  year.
I did notice last night that there is new baby duckweed starting all over the surface so things must be warming up. Water temp was 55 degrees yesterday. O0

Hardy waterlilies will outgrow their pot, sending runners over the side, & even will split pots if they become too crowded.  Depending on the size/type of pot your lily is planted in will depend on how soon it needs repotted.

Naturally Kat your lilies love you!  I just took a look at mine and they are sending up pads too.  One pot looks like there are two pine cones growing with little shoots growing out the top.

Plus the shubs are chasing and making a riot of the one time tied anarchis.

Don't feel too bad Gary.  Should have seen it before I cleaned up ... string algae was really bad & it will probably come back  :(  You've got to go to work & I've been spending ALL of my daylight hours messing around outside the last couple weeks.  It looks like I've not done much but I've fixed a broken main sprinkler line, emptied/cleaned/releveled almost all of my ponds including the wood sided ones, extended several other sprinkler heads so they'd spray better, pulled weeds, clipped back dead foliage, caught way too many goldfish, rehomed all but 1 tub of gambusia, completely cleaned out the Skippy filter for my watonai pond, made a net for over the a pond, etc, etc, etc.  Very little help from anyone else, so I cannot imagine where you find the time to work, prepare your yummy food, take care of your place, & everything else you do.  Still have tons to do (sigh).

Oh Kat I can't wait till I can see that in my pond....some of the ice melted the last couple days and I noticed one of the pots tipped over...don't know how that happened, but can't get at it to right it yet.

Kat, I was thinking of your post yesterday when I was out there picking up floating debris from my pond.  Lo and behold I saw a couple of lily pads on the far end of the pond.  I was so excited and screamed for DH that he thought I fell into the pond.   @O@  Yours definitely look much "prosperous" though.   O0

Y'all will catch up soon.  Apparently our temps have been about 10 degrees higher than normal, so the plants are growing early.  Supposed to drop down to the low 40s at night later this week so we aren't into full swing yet  ;)

My hardies have had pads all Winter even though this has been the worse Winter since moving to Florida. My tropicals are the ones that have suffered the most. So far, everything is coming back including my crinum lily, sensitive vine, and maybe the aloe vera.
Happy ponding,

I got my second big stock tank set up this weekend. Two lilies have pads coming to the surface but the real shocker was my Colorado. It not only had pads coming up but it had 4 BUDS!!! I've never had buds this early on a lily! Never! Late April early May is the earliest I've ever had buds and blooms and its usually the white varieties.

Mine look about the same as yours - lots of new Pads heading for the sun!!!!! o(:-)  All my Fish are begging for food  o(- I am just starting to feed them lightly. Still have a few more chilly nights ahead!!

I have a few small Lilies waiting in the sunroom, since fall. They were Floaters when we did the fall cleanout and I put them in an aquarium to get them started - they are now reaching for the sun - so soon they will be going out into the pond!!

All Fish are there!!!! o(

Wow, I would think you could leave them in the pond in Tucson. How cold are your winters down there?

Things are starting to green up in my pond. The marginals are all coming around and a few lilies have pads about halfway up.
