Oh Marla, don't get me started................

My sons are 25 and 27.  I know of several kids they went to school with that somehow got on disability because of "mental issues" when it was just plain lazyness.  I just don't understand how we can keep supporting all of this.
I have a problem with food banks too, in my area it is mostly meth users standing in line at the local food bank.

That is good news, Esther.  I'm pretty bitter about the whole unemployment benefit issue myself though, because my husband is self-employed.  We pay self-employment taxes, and social security taxes, but if times are hard my dh would get nothing.  The past several months business has slowed to a crawl, but even if the phone never rang a single time, self-employed individuals aren't eligible for any help at all, despite all the high taxes we pay.  It's just unfair.

Barb, I wondered about the employer in that case. This is the first time DH or I have ever gotten unemployment and I'm 66 and he's 62 so we don't know how it works. But you are right. It's unfair that if his employees can draw it then he should be able to also.

He actually doesn't have any employees, Esther. He's just a "sole proprietor", with his own carpentry/woodworking company, working by himself.  Ordinarily, your employer will pay social security taxes, but when you are self-employed you have to pay your own social security taxes.  Unfortunately the self-employed are not eligible for unemployment benefits, either.  There are many, many self-employed people in the U.S. that are hurting now, and the current unemployment rate doesn't include them.  The job situation is even worse than a lot of people realize.  It is good though that at least some people can find some help.  Hopefully things will improve for all of us soon.

Karen...I'm in agreement, there is no accountability for a lot of services that we have, even unemployment a lot of the people who collect it are not really looking for new work. Another system that I think is over used are those that now claim and abuse the bankrupcy system, I know a few I would just like to shake.   My son is almost 28, he does construction so collects unemployment through the winter months, he calls it his "rocking chair" money.  Although he is fed up with the company he works for right now, and would like to find another the field is not hireing many right now.  He also has his obsticals as he is ad/hd (takes no meds now--no insurance) and is also so dyslexic that in school he qualified for reading for the blind.  He has had many setbacks due to his problems, but has a great work ethic and job loyalty once hired.

I was self-employed for 15 yrs, some things were nice some not so.....the same goes for my employment now.  One constant was my DH has had a great job with insurance so that was very helpful with a family.

But doesn't the employer have to pay into the system for the employees to be able to draw it? So maybe I can see why a self employed person couldn't draw it.
