48 degrees today ... 46 degrees last weekend in North-Central Virginia.  My four koi and assorted goldies all survived the winter but they're still staying near the bottom of the pond.

I took my bio-filter out of storage and started the stream for a couple of days, then shut it down today.  I figured at this point all I'm doing is chilling the water even further.  I think my pond needd a couple more weeks before things really come to life.

48 here! :'(  It warmed up for a few days a couple of weeks ago and I saw the fish and did a head count and lost one wakin, turned on the waterfall as they were all swimming near the top and I didn't know if they needed oxygen or food!  Then it snowed and turned cold AGAIN!  Nice past three days and haven't seen them at all since turning on waterfall.

Okay Sean how on earth can your pond be 73 if you are in Vancouver??? Is it in the house???

Only plants I know for sure that made it is the parrots feather!  Fingers crossed on the rest of the plants!

Reminds me of Tim the Tool Man Taylor and his vroooooooooooom, big man tools! How much does one of those suckers cost? Prolly too much for my pocket book. Also do they take a lot of electricity? My pond is about 48*. I had to change most all of the water yesterday and clean the muck out of the bottom. I think that is why I lost half my fish this winter. Not getting enough oxygen I assume. Now they are happy and swimming around in nice clear water. Only 8 left but I have the 13 more in the house waiting to go out when it warms up. I will have to keep up on the house keeping from now on. I feel bad................I murdered my fishies!

Pretty steady between 48º & 52º for the last week!  Fish are now starting to look at me as though I'm supposed to feed them.  I'm ignoring them....not warm enough & they're fat enough - if they're that hungry they can eat some of the algae!  No more ice & no more freezing hands pulling out the clumps of string algae!  I even did a partial vacuum last weekend & will do some more this week.  Less dirt plus a partial water change - can't beat that Pond-Vac III  @O@

Pond water here is in the 50s.  Cleaned it yesterday and turned on the waterfall.  Fish were swimming around nicely.  Hope they survive the pond cleaning because there were mulm galore and water got pretty murky after cleaning but filtering nicely now.

Weather turning colder this week but will leave the waterfall on to get some oxygen in since I have cleaned & packed up the bubblers for next winter.

Probably around 75*     My fish have been swimming and eating all winter, and they spawned two weeks ago.  I've got babies a half an inch long right now.

Here is the info for the one I have, remember this is in USD funds and I paid Canadian exchange so my final cost was considerably more around $500.00 including shipping to MikeW's place. It costs about $15.00 per month to run in the winter because it is always running, come summer I turn it off. It is an expense I am willing to pay as I have some of the rarest tropical waterlilies in the world in my pond and treating them as annuals is not an option. PS, MikeW brought it to me on the plane as it did not arrive while I was visiting in time. He has a story about customs and the ordeal he went through to get this to me. Oh I almost forgot the additional duty he had to pay to get it through.

Sean,

How big is your pond?  How much of a heater do you think it would take to keep 5,500 gallons in zone 8 at 73-75 degrees?

Hi Casey,

This one would do the trick, mine is only 400 gallons but even in the coldest days of the winter this one does not work very hard. This heater is rated for a very large pond. They have larger ones as well and some with multiple heating tubes.

Cheers,
Sean

As Sean mentioned - imagine having that monster in your hand luggage, going through security at LAX during a code orange security alert. I was whisked into a special line for additional screening faster than one could say ' suspicious baggage'.
Water lilly pond heater was not the answer the TSA guys were expecting.

Yes Mike I read all about your trials and tribulations on getting through customs when I clicked on the link for the heater. There was the old article about the trip to Canada from 2005. And they thought your camera was a bomb? Yikes! Anyway my fish will just have to warm themselves somehow in the winter as that gadget is too pricey for me and I don't have any tropical lilies.

I checked the link and emailed the heater company with some questions on the 24th and have not had a response.  Is this normal or is there a better way to make contact?

Hi Casey,

I had a bit of trouble contacting them as well. They do seem to be slow at returning email.
The product however is superior to anything you can find elsewhere. I spent a lot of time researching this purchase. You could go to the manufacturer but they are wholesale and the price they quote is not far off from retail. I have had this heater almost 4 years now and I LOVE IT

Cheers,
Sean
