The most expensive water lily I've ever bought
« on: April 11, 2009, 05:52:53 AM »
OK, so I tried to order this lily last year & the company kept telling me they were sold out for the season (& it was early in the season, too!).  So this year I started calling early & finally found someone that was willing to check to see if they had it.  She called back & said Yes  8-)~.  I was quite excited & bought it without asking too many questions.  The other 2 lilies I was interested in they didn't have or none available.  I got the lily & it certainly was well packed.  The lily was decent sized (but by no means blooming size), all the surface pads clipped off & no roots.  Still in my excitement stage & didn't pay attention to the packing slip on the outside of the box.  Well, this morning I finally open the invoice & found they charged me $14.95 for shipping 1 small lily!!!  :o  Now I'm praying to the lily goddess to keep the racoons away & that the lily will flourish  {:-P;;  Hoping further still that it is one that multiplies rapidly, LOL.  I'm not going to say which lily as I dont' want to jinx it  ;)

Racoons trashed twice one of my expensive new hardies last year.  That company when I ordered it promised that it was blooming size.  Well, I got it & it was one of the smallest divisions of hardies that I've ever seen.  This spring it does have some tiny pads & 2 crowns.  Still sending up prayers to the lily goddess  :)

What lily was it?...Oops sorry, not trying to jinx it.
What is the name of the company?
Is it rare?

Tim, I'm being weird & don't want to say the name of the lily in case I jinx it  {:-P;; ;D

Come to think of it, you probably have it in your private stash & you'll be offering this year, LOL  ::)  ;)

I'm superstitious as well.  I don't allow my wife to wash my Philadelphia Eagles jersey.  She might jinx the team next season. I'm being serious.  :)

That really kind of fries me when companies charge so much extra for shipping.
Hope the lily does well for you. ;)

LOL Kat--never have spent much on plants either....and never from a catalog store(I've learned that friends from forums sell much better plants )....but, sure do remember when I bought my first asagi---a $40 petsmart koi--I was sooo happy with it...then it committed suicide--I carried that dried out dead fish around the yard crying.....John came running out thinking something terrible was wrong with me...he told me I was crazy after he found out I was crying over a dead fish.....of course now that we have Fred and Ginger I don't think I'd be the only one crying if either of them died  {:-P;;.....

I got a lily once with roots choppped off. I was very angry. It barely lived and it produced no tubers. I was tropical and it had to just try to survive all summer. I wrote them a hot email too. Why would they chop all the roots off? Idiots.
Is it tropical? what color? LOL!

I'll post pictures of it as soon as it blooms .... keeping my fingers crossed that it thrives.

Sounds like several of you have gotten burned on some plants.  I know when I first started out someone on GardenWeb offered white tropical lilies & I sent them a Colorata via Priority.  When I got my first class envelop it was 1 tiny joint of snowflake  >:(-

Gary, I do believe you've got me beat on the price  :o

Yeah I wish I could remember where I got it. I was on  the old awgs forum at the time. Even Albert Greenbergs and older lilies were priced in their high thirties. It might have been the place Sue and them owned.

Gander, you bought it from Waterford Gardens. I got mine the same year, but it was very lucky. A WG friend begged Craig to sell her just one or two. I think she commented how her pregnant friend was dying to get one. ;)

Kat, let's see, what's the WG equivalent of 'break a leg'? How about 'bloom some algae'?! ;)

Jessica you are right I just found where I had posted about in on Koiphen too. I just looked and they are still wanting $60.00 for it and $55.00 for a Miami Rose. Darn I have given away lots of money if you can get $55.00 for Miami Rose. >:(- >:(- >:(-Although weedy it is still one of my favorites.

Kat when you get your hands on a lily I can safely bet you can make it grow like wildflower.  Hoping it makes babies so you can share with the rest of us who wish we could grow them as half as well as you (we = me  :D ).

I'm keeping my fingers crossed & still offering tribute to the Lily Goddess, LOL.  The other lily that I ordered last year that was too small to begin with & then the racoons trashed it several times is still hanging in there.  I'm most anxious for it to thrive & bloom, too.  Hopefully I'll be able to offer extras eventually  ;)

I paid $30 or so for my first Helvola years ago before I had a computer and found the forum. Locally, hardies are still about that in price and tropicals around $50. I'd have no lilies if it weren't for the forum. I've spent thousands on plants but not so much on each plant......

The only time I bought a waterlily on eBay it wasn't truly named. She sent a replacement but the coons got it before it bloomed so I never knew if it was correct or not.

I don't know what they do with them but they sometimes pull my waterlilies out of their pots/mud bottom and take them away. I've found them twenty feet from the pond and some not at all. Damn raccoons. I'm soooo frustrated with them.
I can't electrify my entire yard.

It is still growing, the bud didn't make it.  Looks like it is like Lily Pons that it'll need a big space to grow in & time to get settled.

LeeAnn151,  Just run one electric fence wire temporally around your most raccoon visited pond and put some aluminum foil on the wire and smear some peanut butter on it.    If this doesn't completely solve your problem at least you will get some sweet revenge.
