What kind of frog?
« on: April 14, 2009, 06:46:02 AM »
Does anyone know what kind of frog?  I'm sure this is one that has provided tadpoles this spring  ::)  Cold enough that I was able to "pet" it.  The reaction was to close the eyes & hunch up.

He kind of looks like a bull frog. But too Green?  Maybe a early spring color and will turn brownish/Grey for summer?

The fold of skin running from the eye to above and behind the ear says it's a bull frog and the ear being the same size as the eye says it's a female.   In the male the ear is bigger than the eye.

That what I kind of thought, too.  I'll be relocating her to a local park that has a pond & a big bog area this afternoon.  Hopefully she will do fine there.

I didn't import it as it showed up on it's own & probably got big on my mosquito fish.  I was wondering why my mosquito fish population was down.

Yes, that is a bullfrog.  I lost my huge resident bull frog this winter (found him after the pond was thawing from the ice storm) , I'm sure another will takes its place.  I know they will eat anything that will fit into their mouth, but I loved sitting out on the deck and listening to him sing.

Ponds are like patato chips, ya just can't have one.

The ones here sing LOUDLY!!  It gets really LOUD if 3 or more are out there!!! o(:-)  My DH thinks the neighbors may start complaining!! I want to see the Dog Warden come chase my Bullfrogs!!!

Kat, I cant blame no baby fish on the Bullfrogs - I put a 4inch catfish in my pond last spring - I had caught him at the local lake!!  He is a whopping 12 inchs from eating all the Bullfrog tadpoles and baby fish!!  Keeps my fish population low. Anything over an inch long is safe - well except from Herons!!
