How to kill mosquitos?
« on: April 22, 2009, 12:15:20 AM »
Hi everyone! I have a mosquito problem with growing water lilies and I do not want to introduce any fishes in my pots. Can anyone give me any ideas as to how I could kill mosquitoes?

Home Depot, Lowe's, WalMart--look in the garden section for mosquito dunks.  It has BT which kills mosquito larvae.

There is never enough room for all of the water lilies that I want ;-)

Think about a Siamese fighting fish.  They are solitary, so just one per pot is perfect.  They don't need filtration (as long as the pot is reasonably clean), aeration, or much space at all.  They are tropical, though, and do need warmth.  They won't root around or hurt your plants in any way.

Their natural diet is mosquito larva, and they WILL keep your pest population down.  I will often bring one of my indoor fish out to a pot or tub that has larva in it, and leave it out there for a day.  At day's end, ALL the larva will be gone.

Are these bt safe for eating? My mom wants to cook with the lotus and I was wondering if it would be safe to eat the plants?

Thanks for the advice everyone.

BT is safe for humans and pets. It is a bacteria that affects the digestive system of a mosquito larvae, nothing else. Other forms of BT are used for caterpillars and has the same affect on them.
Happy ponding,

Mosquito Dunks are perfectly safe. Unless you are a mosquito larvae.

paradise fish are cousins, they get alittle larger then a betta (another name for Siamese fighting fish), will eat their weigh in mosquitos and other larva, and are usually cheaper then Bettas.

But they are still considered a tropical fish.....
