DIY Curb Appeal
« on: April 29, 2009, 06:14:05 PM »
We purchased our home in Texas 2.5 years ago. In the last 6 months, we've finally gotten around to a few projects we've been meaning to do. We did some things before then, but it's getting closer to being complete now. For those of you not from Texas, the majority of homes (at least in my area) are brick and there are a lot of stained fences and similar shutters. I'd say it's 'Texas Style'.

Here's the place when we bought it. Boxy hedges, outdated shutters, etc. There was a new fence and sprinkler system, which are both nice.

Closer view.

We put in new windows, rounded off the hedges, put in some ivy, and an obnoxious Florida flag that drives all the Longhorn fans nuts. Hahaha! You might also remember the mosaic mailbox that I made.

The home had a brand new fence that started to weather, so we stained it in December.

Shortly after, we stripped the poor stain job on the deck and stained it to match. This photo was taken last night. I also painted my red adirondack chairs green a few weeks ago.

In February, we finally bought the tile we picked out long ago and repaired and tiled the front porch. We also replaced an old post with a cedar post and stained it to match. It's a terra cotta colored tile with chisled edges. It coordinates with the brick really well.

Just last weekend, we finally built and stained cedar shutters to match everything. I am amazed at how much lighter the brick looks with the wooden shutters. The black seems to really darken things. We still need to fasten the last set. With all the rain this week, it hasn't been easy to finish installing.

I wouldn't be surprised if we end up with a new front door and some brighter landscaping. Anyone have suggestions for adding color?

Clearly the banner brightens up the house, but I may be a little biased.  I think impatients out in front of the beds would bring in color or you could try passiflora that could be cool on a oblesk.  I like the change in shutters!

The new shutters are a definite improvement along with all the other work you've done.  Try planting some begonias as they do good in partial shade & will come back in the spring time.  Your patio ponds look happy.

Sure do remember the mailbox. About that time I bought all kinds of glass, glass instruction materials, and glass tools. I never did a thing with them. LOL

Your house look really nice with all the improvements.

How is your training going?

Thank you for all the comments. Home ownership is a never ending project, eh?

Esther, which training are you referring to?

I love hydrangeas, and the front yard is pretty shaded by the magnolia and elm tree. Do you think they would work out there? The left side of the yard (near the magnolia) does get a little bit of direct afternoon sun though. Impatients and begonias are two other good options--thanks for those suggestions! This house isn't my first choice in style, etc., but the public school here is great. There are only like 15 kids/class and it was the top elementary school in all of Texas a few years back. The commute stinks too, but it's a good place for the family.

For the front door..find some bright complimentary color.. I had a friend who painted her BRIGHT YELLOW... it looked good!!  Maybe a lighter stain in the same family as the shutters?
