Tropical tubers and baggies?
« on: May 24, 2009, 12:13:24 PM »
I remember reading on here about floating tropical water lily tubers in baggies til they sprout?

Is that right?  Do I have to worry about cooking them?  Do they need to be in the sun?

I've received several tubers (lily unknown) and would love to sprout them.

Suggestions????

Yes, float in the sun.  I use either the quart size or gallon size but Freezer thickness.  Check the water every couple of days & add fresh so the water doesn't become mucky.  I'll also use a straw to blow up the bag to make it more greenhouse like.  Good luck.

There is never enough room for all of the water lilies that I want ;-)

I am floating mine here in Missouri right now. I also have an aquarium heater in the tubs for cool nights.  I am zone 6. So far they are doing well. I used to do it in aquariums, but the light outside is much better.

Why float in a baggie & not just the pond or aquarium?

I have too many to let float loose. I don't want them mixed up. And they can float off and get lost in other plants.

The baggie lets the water in the bag heat up faster and hotter than the water in the pond.It also keeps the corm at the top where it is warmer. I have mine in baggies and as they start sprouting I plant them up.

Hi Frank, your setup looks neat. For stubborn tubers, I find that using a glass container works wonders.
