Darn wind!
« on: October 29, 2006, 10:58:36 AM »
We had really high winds yesterday. Enough to totally destroy my harbor!!!  >:(- Hubby and I have been having a disagreement over whether or not to take it down so he could build a garage. Well, I guess he wins. The harbor decided to "volunteer".  ::)

Sorry to see that Becky.
What is the plant you had growing on the top of it?

Cheers,

Bummer!  Well, you can let the vines grow all over his garage!

It's a wisteria, Sean. I have no idea how old it is because it was here when we moved in. The man who lived here died in 1988 and he was the gardener. His wife lived here alone until we bought the house in 1998. I know he planted it so it has been here for a very long time. It is one strong plant. It vined itself up into the apple tree next to it. One time when Hubby was mowing it about yanked him off the mower. One of the vines got wrapped around his neck!!! It got a good haircut then.

Here it is in the spring.

What a beautiful plant. I'd be hard pressed to let that one go.

Ya know what?  If I had wisteria, I would let it pull down the garage.  That is one gorgeous flower.  Course I would also plant some maypops to flower after the wisteria did and then I'd plant some autumn clematis to flower after the maypops, and maybe an annual (purple hyacinth bean) for the in-between.  Do you really think DH will notice?

That is one beautiful vine. I would hate to see it go. We got those winds before they headed your way and they were wicked. We now have to replace the gazebo over our spa. The wind snapped it in half.  >:(-

Ah, Yes,  Wisteria.

Little known to most, there is a wisteria native to America.  It is Wisteria frutescens.  It is hardly ever planted here though, and usually the Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) is.  Chinese wisteria is a weed! It is terribly invasive.  My wife begged for one for over 20 years before I relented and planted two of them, one in the front yard and one on a pergola.  I have been trying without success for over five years now to eradicate the pergola one; the front yard one requires heavy pruning twice annually to keep it from consuming the whole area.

Wisteria blooms ARE beautiful, but last only a week or two, then the vine becomes “triffid” like (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Day_of_the_Triffids )  in it's inexorable advancement  of creating a "little shop of horrors" landscape.

You may think you are getting rid of your wisteria, but I bet 10 gallons of roundup, it will be back!

I had a fine Wisteria and in inexplicably died.  I planted another and it is doing well, but after 4 or 5 years NO flowers!
There is a famous one in a town here called Sierra Madre.it cover the homes in a city block! Once a year the community hosts the public.
I am sure Mickey has seen this magnificent plant.  He may even have photos!  Mickey?

Wisteria is a very common plant here and yours looked particularly nice Becky. I hate high winds too and we are having a few ourselves at the moment.
