not a Heron or Egret
« on: June 03, 2009, 11:54:58 AM »
A bird I don't recognize is a new threat,  Not as big as Heron a light buff color.
We have scared it off  a few times.  It does return, but no harm yet.

I had some shade fabric on the patio and decided i Could;d cover myself in it and sit quietly. I did, with my Red Ryder BB rifle on my lap.  Sure enough, he returned.  He walked around the pond, looked at me and  apparently saw no threat.  I knew that if he got a tad closer id blast him!  Of course I knew that my wife would come out and crack up at me covered in shade fabric.  She did, and at the worst possible time. He scrammed fast.
I think I'll make a snare. I was good at that as a boy.

Any idea what this bird is??

Don't be shooting that bird Jerry.  >:(-   It's only trying to get by in it's lifetime.  When you put out the buffet of fish, frogs, turtles etc., you just rang the dinner bell for this fella.  Be nice now.

some shorebirds are considered endangered or threatened and shooting them is illegal. {-)

I think it would be prudent to know what kind of bird it is before any course of action is taken. Pictures... If your close enough to shoot it, try the camera first... I have mourning doves wash and drink in my falls. It would be especially heart breaking if it were something endangered, and protected.

It's actually against the law to relocate raccoons!   I have, so turn me in

There is a water park 5 miles away (Tillman) thousands of Herons & Egrets. All protected and breeding.  How will they make a living?   I know, A govt grant ! >:(-
We have beaches here inc a famous one in La Jolla that can no longer be used thanks to the marine Mammal\ protection Act.  Oh, the Beach are open but filled with Sea Lions and Sea lion poop. The beach i speak of is called "kiddies Beach"  It is now unsafe

The air rifle that I showed can be pumped up strong or just for a pop with soft pellets. This critter isn't visiting the pond for the view, he's looking for supper.

I was amazed to find out that the most shark attacks took place off of the California coast. This was because they placed the seals and sea lions on the protected list. As they multiplied, the sharks moved in for supper. It seems that man sometime has a reverse effect on what he's trying to accomplish. My wife hates Sarah Palin because she allows the hunting of wolves. I tried explaining that by putting them on the endangered species list, they proliferated and it got to the point that they were decimating the deer and elk herds young, they were eating themselves out of a home. Alaska has game experts that do the counts and know when a species is overpopulated and needs to be controlled. She still hates Palin.

Everyone here knows that I love animals, we rescue any that we see. We have taken in so many baby birds I have lost count. I bring home kittens and so does she if they look like they will be hit by a car. But the owl that tried to make off with our baby goat Clyde will be toast if I see him staking out our yard again. You do have to draw the line somewhere in my humble opinion.

yep Bullfrog, I meant to mention the Great Whites.  If man didn't exist there would be a natural balance.
I fish on party boats, and if fishing is good we are plagued with Sea Lions biting out catches in half.
The Skipper moves to a new spot. but these intelligent creatures follow.
I used to hate it when the Capt would blast them with a rifle.   They did keep away and catch their own fish.
As stated,  The Marine mammal Protection Act had let the population burgeon.

The wolves in Alaska have not decimated the deer and elk population. They eat caribou and moose up there and there are plenty. They actually strengthen the herds by culling the weak, sick, old and young. Unlike man who shoots the biggest and best. Deer are over populated pretty much everywhere in the USA. The elk in Yellowstone now act like wild animals instead of tame cows and there are plenty of them.

Palin has allowed females with pups to be killed and allows killing from airplanes. No sport to that at all. She disgusts me.

I guess it's according to what literature printed by whom. I instruct at a local firefield and a crew from Alaska came down and said the wolves were decimating the elks young and had gotten overpopulated, thats why they were taken off the endangered species list. My wife gets all of the stuff that the liberals mail out trying to make a buck off of people's love for animals. They point out the methods of hunting also. There are efficient ways to control the wolf population and hunting them from a plane is one. They are not trying to be sportman like, just trying to control them. I trust the wildlife experts in Alaska to make the call on when they are overpopulated.

That picture made me laugh so loud my DH came down to see what was so funny! Gave him a nice chuckle too! Thanks for the laugh.  Good luck with the bird. I may be sitting like that soon enough.  I've noticed a heron camping out in a tree at the pond two houses down!
