Our DIY pond pics
« on: June 10, 2009, 01:13:10 PM »
This is my second pond, my first was about 150 gallon preformed that I also installed myself. Obviously when we moved the pond had to stay and we have missed having it soooooo much these last two years (as have our poor fish who have been in a 90 gal tank, yes I took them afraid the new owners would let them die). We decided this year was the year for the pond project finally! After getting a couple estimates we found out, not suprisingly that what we wanted was WAY outta our budget! We, well I LOL did not want to scale back on size so we made the decision to do a lil reasearch/reading and jump in full force head first with no clue wether it would be perfect or a total disaster!! Other than the HARD, HARD, HARD work it really was not as bad as we thought it would be and turned out exactly the way we wanted/hoped. Maybe I can inspire someone trying to decide to hire it done or give it a try theirself to give it a shot. Like I said with us it was all about the cost, we wanted someone else to do the work but we just couldn't and now I am so glad we did it ourself and it literally cost us less than half it would have hired done. So I am hoping these pics come out, I have never posted pics on here so I will try it and see if they post! These are a few pics of the step by step process. The entire project took me and my husband about a week and a half to complete...oh and the last pic is of our first MAJOR problem that we have since taken care of/solved. All done it is about 14 x 8 feet at the longest/widest parts and is about 1000 gallons. My fish are so happy again finally to be out in a pond again! They have been out for about 3-4 weeks now. I'll have to post more pics once I get some plant growth and stuff. Ok here goes....I hope  :-\

That's a lot of digging and rocks!  You have a nice design!  Lucky fish  o(  I especially like how there is a natural edge to the paved bricks.

Detest the bird.  Dump it!  Doesn't go with the design!  :o  :D

Thanks MIG unfortunately that dumb bird picked off a big fantail and our biggest goldfish I had had for about 5 years! Sucks to have half the pond netted but no one else has disappeared so....

Sorry to hear that dastardly marauder got away with your fish.  My ponds are netted and I have gotten used to them being there.  Something like security makes me feel better about the safety of our feesh-pups.  O0

What a great job! It looks like you can set inside your home and view also!! I wish I could do that one. But I chose a more private spot and I am happy just the same. You did a great job with the rocks too!!  @O@

Very nice job.  I love a pond with a rock bottom, we call it river-jack here, and did mine that way.  Pictures were very nice as well (except for the last one).  They should be helpful to anyone wanting to do a DIY pond.

It appears that you have you plants directly in the river-jack rather than pots.  Have you done this before?  I would be interested to know (from you or anyone) how this works out, as I have considered it.  I was a bit hesitant with concerns of the plants running wild and taking over.

Yes this is the first time I have planted directly in the rock, so far so good but this pond is only several months old. I've planted a lot more since these pics and it all seems to be doing great. I had many people tell me that the plants don't need dirt to grow so I wanted to try it. I used the baskets in my old pond and they were a total pain! Roots grew out the bottom causing them to fall over, the pots constantly split, I was always messing around replanting and it was a pain and a mess! So this seems real easy!

I have often thought of trying this.  You are right, many water plants do not need soil, and it does appear that it would be much easier, a no brainer.  The only reservation I have is the invasiveness of many water plants.  They might be quite hard to control once they have become esablished.  Has this ever been a problem for anyone?

Great job! I like how your pond has that beach of rocks. it looks great. how much did it cost you to buy all the rocks or did you pick it up somewhere for free?

Unfortunately we had to buy them all....all said and done there is about $1500 in rocks inside and out. We were very suprised to find out how expensive they all were but really wanted the inside rock as well..... :-\

I live about 15 minutes away from Columbus in Ohio, there is a stone company called Lang Stone downtown. That is where all the stone came from, sure wish we could have found them all ourself but that probably would have taken us years!

I can only speak to yellow iris (pseudocorus). I started out with a quart container and by fall it had jumped the container and formed a bushel basket full of root system. It was beautiful but trying to manhandle and divide it was nearly impossible. Good thing it's terrestrial. I used most of it in the perennial beds but beware. If it has constant water it will turn into a back breaking monster.

I know this is a old thread.  But curious for an update.  How is the pond working for you?

Have you done any planting around the outside of the pond?  Figure any way to get rid of the devil of a bird?
