Tadpoles and mosquito fish
« on: June 10, 2009, 03:08:30 PM »
My Taddies are doing fine in a tub in the greenhouse, however I keep getting mosquitos in the tub.
They are tiny and are "jerkily" swimming around.  They are very tiny.  Dare I put a few mosquito fish in there?  most of the taddies are big, but a few small ones remain.

Help!

I've got tadpoles & mosquito fish together without any issues that I know of.

There is never enough room for all of the water lilies that I want ;-)

Not a problem. :)
In Southern California, for fun - go get some red swordfish at a tropical pet store. They are common and cheap. Very aggressive mosquitoe control. And colorful.
They won't last in cold winters. But in Southern California, that shouldn't be a problem.

Do you have to feed the redsword fish and does the water need to be salty?

I had the same exact problem Tuesday.  So I put one of my Siamese fighting fish out in the tub.  The tadpoles are a little too big for her to eat.  She didn't get nearly all of the mosquito larva, though, so this morning I put a male out with her.

Now I suppose I'll be raising baby toads AND baby bettas.   ;)

Red swordfish are fresh water fish - no salt.
And they kill mosquitoe larvae better if you don't feed them. Very aggressive carnivores.

You could also just plop in a Mosquito Dunk. They are in all of my ponds and they don't harm the tadpoles.
