Has anyone had any experience with Darmera Peltata
« on: June 14, 2009, 05:45:21 PM »
AKA Indian Rhubarb?

I bought this plant off of Ebay and will receive it next week.  It looks like a great plant for the pond.

Wondering if anyone has this plant or can tell me your experiences with it?  I am considering putting it in my garden pond and also my farm pond.

Thanks, Brenda

It like average to wet soil. Does not do very well constantly submerged at all. Gets leggy and smaller funky leaves when submerged for too long.
I grow mine in my semi-shady perennial garden in soil that stay evenly moist, not soggy.

In the wild it grows at the edges of ponds, streams, lakes and only get submerged for short periods of time after hard rains.
Sure, do a Google search and you'll find pix of it appearing submerged...but that's either after a rain, or a potted plant that was dunked into the pond
moment before the photo was taken to make it look like a really healthy pond plant cuz they wanna sell it as a pond plant.
If anything, it's a bog/marginal plant.  8)

LOL Esther! lol

Thanks Joyce, I kind of figured you'd know!

I might put it on the side of my farm pond where it is wet in the spring and dries out in summer.  What do ya think?
