I have lost all this weight from just doing the new job in the operating room, no special diet or anything else. I am so busy and always moving that it's just burn burn burn. There is no place to really sit and I am moving heavy equipment and positioning patients all the time. When I finally plateau I will start weight training. I have been too tired to do it when I get home from the new job, however each day I feel more fit. I can finally walk up the steep hill to Broadway without being winded and having my leg muscles stiff and sore. I am looking forward to further big losses. My short term goal is to get to 195 pounds by the end of July. My starting weight on May 25/09 when I started the new job was 233 lbs.

And I thought the new job was the best thing to come to me this year, I have not changed my diet and yet still, really big losses and I am not even trying, it's just the new job.

I did pick up a lot of apparatus from Craig's list and have been weight training. I am stronger but weight loss is still modest at best.
I salute you!  What a deal. More money (I assume) and less weight!

Good for you Sean. If you have done this with no special diet or weight training, when you do start with the weights it will really accelerate your metabolism. Aerobics raise your metabolism quickly but after 30 minutes your body is back to it's normal state. Weight training raises your metabolism for 6 to 8 hours after you stop. Just start real easy, you may think that you are being easy on yourself but the next day you will be so sore you can't hardly move. Start light with 25 pound dumbells for curls. Dumbells are better than a machine because you tend to cheat and let your strong arm do most of the work.

I think 25 lbs for curls is too much, after 2 weeks fine. Let your body get over the new onslaught on your muscles and joints.  You can always add more weight.  You are young and you are not striving to become Mr Canada. Slow and easy to start.

congradulations sean....i lost 30 lbs and have kept it off for over a year but now i can't get the last 25 off..i work outside alot but i sit on my rump at work...i know i know exercise but thats such a dirty word...i figure the outside work will do it but i need something to jolt my metabolism.being 49  this year doesn't help...lorraine

You are right Jerry, 25 pounds would be too much to start with. I've been working out for many years so I lift more. Start with enough weight to feel a burn when you get to ten reps. When you get to the point that you can do ten reps without stopping, or that weight is not really a challenge anymore, move up. I work out with some huge people that can't lift what I do and there are people that look like they have no muscle tone at all that can lift much more.

That's great, Sean.  There's nothing like being fit!

I have somewhat of the same thing, but in reverse... my job hanging wallpaper is very active, but, since I've been basically out of work for most of this entire year, I have been moving a lot less.  Even though I swim, bike, or do the treadmill practically every day, the pounds still creep up.  Oh, and it's true... once you hit 50, it's way harder to keep the weight off.  Maddening and Saddening.

Congratulations on the new figure, and the fitter heart and lungs and muscles!

Woohoo!!! That is great!  Once it starts coming off, it gets easier to keep losing more.  The incentive becomes more real as you see results.. This is great that it has just came about from a new job, rather than a designated diet or exercise regimen.  I have been using the treadmill here at work in the gym since February and so far I've lost 33 pounds.  Took about 6 weeks before I started noticing results.  Started at 231- now down to 198.  I go for 1/2 hour on it, 3 or 4 days per week at lunchtime.  I have tried watcing calories better too.  Before, I never considered how much more fattening something is than something else.  It is amazing how some snacks that are so similar are so different in calories!  Plus the treadmill shows how much work it takes to burn such a small amount of calories- it really puts caloric intake into perspective.  Again congrats, and keep losing!

I have been thru all of that, but I have overcome it, I lost more than 50 lbs, I was 245 a few years back and now I am 180.
My waist size was 44 on jeans and now I am 34 hitting the 32's.
All I did was play ddr and frontenis.
But congratulations.
I feel so happy for you, I know how losing weight feels.

The best part is the weight is coming off faster than it went on. I gained 60 pounds when I stopped smoking January 2004 and all that in a little less than 5 months. I have a gym here in the building but it is busy when I am available to go down. I have the P90X program and have decided to hit it hard with that program. I have all the equipment I need now with dumbbells, exercise bands, chinning bar and I also have the rebounder I got for free from freemesa.org. I intend to get a new bike to get around rather than drive and take the bus. I have no intention to get beefy or buff, just fit.

I know my lungs are so much better with the exercise I have been getting as I am using my inhaler less now and even though I still use it twice a day as a preventative, it has not felt like I have needed to use it.

It looks like I am still going to be loosing about 5 pounds per week at this rate. I am already down a couple more pounds and my overall fat percentage has gone from 43% to 30.4% since I started this new job.

I have to say, the new job is a dollar less an hour but I am certainly happy with the loss of money considering all of the unexpected positive gains I am making.

I will keep everyone updated as to my progress.

PS, I am still following my early andropause symptoms with my endocrinologist. I am hoping my natural testosterone levels will go up with all this added and unexpected exercise. If not I will likely start testosterone replacement therapy soon. I have a blood test in one week and will find out if there are any changes since last year. I am too young to go through andropause as soon as I have.

Your loss is spectacular.  It will slow down. 5 lbs a week in the beginning I understand, but now that the baby fat is gone it gets tougher.  Too rapid is not supposed to be good either.
2 pounds a week is considered good.

Sean, be advised the P90X workout routine is a brutal regimen. I have a friend at work who is in great shape and much younger than me and week two was killing him. You don't want to start out too hard on yourself as you may get so sore that you get discouraged and quit. Take it easy at first.

That's great news Sean. Working out at the gym will make a difference. I have been doing that now since Sept along with a bit of running, biking, yoga. I only do each of those once a week but I feel so much better. I also enjoy my workouts. I notice a big difference when I work in the garden etc. It's so much easier and there's very little pain afterwords.

I've been contemplating doing Fred Hahn's program of intensive resistance training ("Slow Burn") because I gained 10 pounds since quitting smoking. Honestly, I don't know what to do as it seems that I'm starving myself. Somehow the insulin is putting the pounds on, no matter how strict I eat.

Anyway, congrats to you! You're doing so well... how about some pics???  o(:-)
