Nightbloomers for non sunny days?
« on: July 08, 2009, 03:07:57 PM »
So here's a thought.  Rather than be bummed when its overcast because the day lilies will not open when its cloudy, maybe we should all own nightbloomers which bloom in the evening.  Afterall they bloom at a time when there is not as much sunshine right?  Correct me if I'm wrong, as I only recently acquired a couple nightbloomers and they have not bloomed just yet, so I do not know how they behave in various amounts of sunlight.

My next female cat will be called "Whata Lily"!

The white one that I have opens sometime after dark and doesn't completely close till around 11:00am.
Happy ponding,

If you think that your question is dumb, imagine how totally stupid you will look if you don't ask it.

On gloomy mornings the nightbloomers will stay open later.

Unfortunately your idea of less sunny days will not help.
Yes night bloomers open in the evening and close in the early to mid morning.
However they need a lot of sunlight.
They get larger than day bloomers for the most part and their metabolism requires as much or in many cases even more sunlight than day bloomers.
The plant may get large but without enough sunlight, you will not see blooms.
The plant with think there is a problem and go into tuber mode trying to produce babies for a better (sunnier) season.

Timgod - Aww, that's too bad... Would have been neat though, especially for those that live in primarily overcast states.  Thanks for the info.
