Love Osmocote...what to do with pond tabs?
« on: July 12, 2009, 04:37:11 AM »
Okay, so last year I got a bottle of pond tabs, killed a few plants by overfertilizing with them and switched to the infamous OSMOCOTE  :D  So, what should I do with the pond tabs?  I'd like to use them up but am afraid to kill my plants....
My next female cat will be called "Whata Lily"!

What kind of pondtabs are you using?
I got mine from LOWES and they have been doing good.
Also is the osmocote's bottle you're using the big one that has white and pink label?
The one they have every corner at HD or LOWES?
I would love to know which one so I may use it next year.
Scott I'll miss you buddy... :(

I also buy my osmocote at lowes but I buy the green one with the 14-14-14 cause everyone or a lot of people here say to use that one cause it's better.

You can use your pond tabs in your bog plants that you don't want to disturb.  I will usually put maybe 2-3 per gallon pot for the entire season.  I've never had pond tabs kill any of my lilies.  What brand are you using?

There is never enough room for all of the water lilies that I want ;-)

The Osmocote I use is made by "Expert Gardener" and is the one that says Bloom & Vegetable. It has a purple lid and the label is white and purple.  I got it at Walmart.  Really like it !  ;D

The pond tabs I bought online at an online ponding store.  I had problems with it overfertilizing my lotus plant last year and almost killed it.  I supspect that it also may have killed my Aurora water lilly that I bought online too (my first water lily purchase before discovering AP).  The brand is "Highland Rim" 10-26-10.

My next female cat will be called "Whata Lily"!

I doubt fertilizer killed your waterlily. It could cause burning or pad damage if you used too many tabs too often but mostly they would just grow and bloom like weeds. Your waterlily could have had crown rot or you could have planted it too deep, I've had several die because raccoons stepped on them and buried them deep and they rotted.

You can still use your pond tabs, just be sure you don't place them close to the crown of the plants.
