Yasuhiro
« on: August 08, 2009, 12:56:54 PM »
Here is one of the intersubgeneric crosses first pioneered by Dr. William Phillips.  This one is named 'Yasuhiro' and developed by Yasuhiro Satou of Japan.  It is a cross between N. gigantea and 'White Colorata'.

While I'm not 100% sure, I have reason to believe that it does produce seed.  I plan to check for pollen as well, but the bees beat me to it today.<g>

Craig, knew you would duplicate that cross? Whatever happened to his plant? Last I heard
he couldn't propogate it in any way and had sent to Kit.  I've not heard from William in
several years.  Have you?  Not even heard in round about way since my mother died I don't
go back to Miss. much.   (His relatives and my relatives talk.)  Sure hope your cross is
fertile.  It is gorgeous!!!

Hi Marie,

Yasuhiro is not one of mine....it came from Japan.  I never got around to doing any B-A crosses.  As for William Phillips, I  really never was in his group of confidantes so rarely heard from him even when he was more active...unless ocassionally he wanted something.<g>  I have no idea what he has been up to or what become of his plant.

Hey Craig,

If just one of these intersubgeneric crosses were to become mamplafied, you would have one of the fullest doubles ever, I assume better than Jonkolnee and possibly in a very true blue.

Cheers,
Sean

I was waiting to check the pollen before I replied....and it is fertile.  Oddly so, actually.  There are two distinct sizes that both germinate and a few in the mix seem to produce to pollen tubes, though one is abbreviated.  Next bloom, I'll try to check if it is seed fertile as well.  Maybe introduce it to the new beauty in the neighborhood...N. pulchella.<g>

But no....it is definitely a tropical and despite the Brachyceras influence, it doesn't seem to be the least bit cold tolerant.  Or particularly easy to grow.  Even the aquatic specialist at Kew Gardens refers to it as a PITA.<g>

Colchicine? Perish the thought!  Call me crazy, but as much as I like my lilies, I have this thing about needlessly handling know carcinogens, be it for preventing fungus on tubers or causing 'mitosis interruptus'.  There are much smarter, safer ways.  Boy, hope that doesn't come off sounding like a 'know it all'<g>

I am working on tetraploids, but the agent involved is much, much less toxic than colchicine, and yet has the same action.  Problem is coming up with a proper concentration.  I've tried the published rates and man have I killed some seedlings this year!<g>  Gonna cut the strength and try again this week, but I have no plans to try it on Anecphya, there chromosome number is already in the stratosphere....maybe 228?  But then again...what the hey, might not be a bad idea.<g>

I remembered you saying you were tinkering, and had not heard anything lately.  I am not aware of anyone else working with lilies, so glad to see you are still trying.   ;D

We did some experiments with hostas and mums when I was in college using colchicine (this was 25 years ago, and the results were more weird than successful  >:(- ), so this has always been of interest to me.  Keep us updated if anything interesting "crops" up!

I'm hoping to see the fruits of my first attempt at inducing polyploidy soon.  I had gathered all the chemical necessities together and was raring to go, when I realized I had forgotten one key ingredient...I hadn't set any seed pods.<g>

So I figured I would practice with the recipe on some Lotus seed I had...a species type named 'Russian Red'.  Not to mention the see are a whole lot bigger and I could 'see' the stages I needed.<g>  Anyway....that was June and the seedlings did seem to fit the description of successfully treated plants.  I planted them out in a pond sometime in July and they have some chubby aerial leaves.  I just hope they bloom before this season is over.  Maybe it is the extended season, but it is not unusual here for a seedling to bloom the first year.

Hi Craig, my gigiantea x colorata and immutabilis x colorata hybrids both have significant amounts of non-deformed pollen that germinates quite readily but I haven't has any success in hybridizing them yet. I actually gave up after my first few attempts, using highly fertile lilies as parents, all failed.

I've used the pollen of both Brachyceras and Anecphya species lilies to pollinate the flowers but no seeds formed.
Self pollination also failed.

Perhaps you'll have better luck than I've had in my attempts.
