Looking for wide petals
« on: August 08, 2009, 04:08:36 PM »
Hi,
Well, I wanted to develop some hybrids of my own. My dream is of a better looking form of Jongkolnee (I love the picotee). But I also wanted to create a Brachyceras hybrid that has wider petals, so that it looks more like a lotus flower. Anyways, my question is, does anyone know of a cultivar (something that is relatively easy to find) that has considerably wide petals? At first I was looking at Miami Rose for the hot pink color and noticed a picture by Rich Sacher where it is compared with Larp Prasert among it and see a big difference there. But I don't think Larp Prasert is actually available here is it? Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks..

Larp Prasert is very fertile and that is part of it's downfall.
Most lilies seen here in the states are seedlings, not the original.
Even in Thailand where it came from it was bastardized so much that Dr. Sam says there is very few that could be correct.

Hi Tim, thanks. That is pretty interesting. Good to know that Larp Prasert is fertile, good news for me anyway. I assume most of these seedlings do not outshine Larp Prasert in color right? If any of them have wide petals, that would be nice for me.

Thats exactly why I want to create a waterlily that looks similar to Jongkolnee but performs way better and has a better flower form (lets see how many decades this will take  :D). That and I don't know where I can even buy one.

King of Siam out of Larp Prasert? Wow.  :o Thanks again Tim for your input.  ;)
