A few blues.
« on: August 16, 2009, 04:30:42 PM »
Someone asked about why there seem to be so few 'true blue' lilies; granted most blue seedlings do have at least some infusion of purple/violet tones, but I wouldn't call blue rare.

My personal opinion?  When push comes to shove, the nuances of the more pastel colored lilies are lost on the buyer and they want vivid and bold and true blues, with the exception of a 'Laura Frase', tend to be somewhat muted.  These are a few of the blue seedlings I keep around that bloomed today, mostly I keep them because I have really come to appreciate soft colors.  Some you may have seen before....I know I have shown the last one in the past, just because it so closely resembles 'Islamorada', but is blue and has mottled pads.....and isn't a vivip.

I have another half micrantha in bud that has nicer mottling and vivips readily but I haven't seen a bloom yet.  I am hoping it is pink, but suspect it may be the typical washed out blue/lavender color common to that cross.  But until it blooms....I can hope.<g>

Very beautiful seedlings! I like the first one best but would be happy with any of them. If only I lived in a warmer climate.

I like the ones that have shading, like deep on the edges, and go paler toward the center.  I finally saw one called... well, it had "Smoke" in the name, in person at a pond store in Austin.  Soooo gorgeous.

Thanks for the pics.  Really lovely.

Thanks all....but the last one looks too much like 'Islamorada', so it is doubtful I'll pursue it..though I have FAN's blessings if I decide to do so.<g>

Julles....you are probably thinking of 'Green Smoke' which I find to fade rather quickly.  I think there are better smoke types, or maybe will be soon.  I'll see what is blooming tomorrow to show you what I mean.

Lou.....I keep looking for your car to be pulling down my road.  Spring you said....I distinctly remember you saying this would be the spring you visited FL.<g>  Btw, I saw the competition picture of your lily and it looks good.  I even took a minute to vote for it.<g>
